The Mac mini M4 with 24GB RAM stands out as a compact desktop for heavier multitasking, Docker, and other memory hungry workflows. The extra unified memory can matter because macOS uses RAM for both system and graphics tasks, and the machine can lean on swap and the SSD when needed. The 256GB internal drive is workable if paired with a fast USB C external SSD, though storage upgrades are often seen as more compelling than paying for RAM alone. For casual browsing and productivity, 16GB is often described as enough, while power users may want to look higher up the lineup.
Common Questions (3)
For casual browsing and productivity, 16GB is usually enough because macOS uses memory efficiently and can lean on swap and SSD access. The 24GB model is more useful for heavier workloads like lots of Docker containers, local LLMs, or other memory-hungry tasks.
Yes. A USB-C or Thunderbolt external SSD can be added, and one comment notes an external NVMe over TB4 can be nearly as fast as the internal drive. That makes the 256GB internal SSD workable if you want to keep costs down.
For demanding work, the Mac Studio is the stronger buy because the base Studio starts with an M4 Max, 32-core GPU, and 32GB RAM. The highest-spec Mini tops out at an M4 Pro with a 20-core GPU and costs close to $1500, so the Studio offers more headroom.

The 32gb version lets me run 12b (4bit quant) local llms with 100k context (with no ssd swap) and get ~15-20tok/sec depending on the model. I can even run 70b (2 bit) models on it (but only at a miserably slow 2-3 tok/sec though).
I also use crossover/sikarugir/wine and get way better gaming performance on it than my ryzen 7 7735hs 32gb ram minipc (steady 4k@30fps using fsr quality for path of exile 2 at medium/high settings). The minipc can only run poe2 at 1080p @ 30 or so fps for comparison.
If all you're wanting is casual use, browsing, productivity, etc., then the 24gb will more than be enough. If you're wanting to do heavy 3D/video editing or run local llms with longer contexts, then obviously 24gb probably isn't the best choice. Personally I wouldn't bother modding the internal ssd for storage—just use an external nvme via tb4. Tb4 will be the bottleneck for speed (approx. 3250mb/s). Hope this helps.

Happy shopping during Black Friday.
Apple has never been a good option for DIY people that like to upgrade PCs themselves. But for average consumers, Macs are a great choice.
The newer M series processors make them a lot more price competitive even with what the average DIY person could come up with, but I'm on the fence about whether Minis are a great choice for the average consumer. They're not fully plug in and play out of the box like Macbooks or iMacs are unless a Mini buyer chooses to sacrifice their pocketbook by going with all Apple accessories (goodbye price competitiveness). Dodging the Apple price there requires doing more research than the average Windows desktop buyer has to do. For example it's not a given that a monitor's built in speakers will work with a Mac's volume controls (an issue I ran into when setting up a Mini for a relative). Pricing and issues like that aside, they're not bad computers.

Yeah, it's $350 more than this deal but considering the upgraded Pro chip and graphics, along with more storage, seemed like a no-brainer. Price matched @ BB and grabbed one. Awesome little machine.
