5.4 pounds PLUS power brick, and it's not USB-C. Chonker. 512gb SSD isn't going to cut it. At least the memory is expandable to 32.

Assuming they are okay with the weight (6.8-7 lbs with charging brick etc) then yeah should be. Also importantly (imo) it helps them deal with one of the more expensive problems of being young, entertainment. Gaming laptop+steam makes for extremely cheap ways to pass the time with humble bundles and the like.
