I've had one of these for years and have always really liked it. But unless you really want to use the gaming features, I would just get the ONN model that was here on FP a while ago. It was about $50 and I am basically just as satisfied with it. The Nvidia does have a spectacular remote but the ONN one is pretty good too.

This is the 2019 Pro version, so it's 6 years old and still the king of streaming boxes.

Same here. I see all the comments about it being the best streaming box, but not sure what it does that can't be done on a much cheaper box.
its basically a chromecast on steroids for the most part. Has decent upscaling if you have a personal server, capable of playing cloud/streamed games

I just asked Claude. It says that it upscales 1080p or 720p content like nobody's business and provides a better gaming experience, eg GEforce NOW. It also has usb and a processor that still runs circles around most of today's streaming devices.

Button Mapper will fix this issue. I've had the Netflix button disabled since day one.

I love the Shield, but I got an Apple TV 4K a few years ago and personally find it to be a superior product for my main TV (it's actually the only Apple product I own). I still have the Shield set up in our main bedroom, and I'll always be impressed by support lifecycle Nvidia has provided (just got a software update within the last couple weeks).

I'm surprised these havent fallen on price mucjvover the years. I bought the shield tv 2017 from Target for around $150. And then got 2 controllers for $25 each. Kodi seems to never work, always no stream loading or found. Also I used to play n64 roms on it.

what do you use them mainly for? Some examples please. Trying to decide if it's a want or a need.
I like to use a bluetooth controller and NES/SNES/N64/GC emulators and ROMS on mine. It also has two USB ports for physically attaching external drives for movie playback. Works perfectly in places you may not have internet and want to watch content (On a ship out to sea half the year for me). Otherwise, I've switched to using AppleTV 4Ks at home and have a 4TB HDD plugged into my router streaming to the AppleTVs using VLC Player on each in the house.

Have had one for years.... nowadays all I use it for is Moonlight game streaming from my gaming rig in the home office over gigabit Ethernet to stream PC games to my 98" TCL QM7K. It is absolutely brilliant for that! Highly recommend.

In addition to this device, I've also used Google Chromecasts of various models plus a Walmart Onn device. All of them pale in comparison to the speed, smooth UI, and reliability of this Shield. It drives me nuts that they haven't released a version with updated hardware but OTOH, you can see that a small drop in price drives a bunch of demand as it's the best option out there even still.

I stream netflix and jellyfin, is pretty much all I do with 2022 (?) Roku UltraHD box. Does this do anything awesome on top fof that? Id expect my jellyfin server to do upscaling or whatever. If theres a way to run an nes/snes emulator *on* the nvidia (not stream from a separate pc), thatd be of high interest.

Original model dropped in 2015 and the latest version(very different from OM) in 2019. And it is still the best media player. I have 4 of them in every room with tv/projector. 3g ram while very low nowdays but i dont encounter any problems
It's the only player on the market that can do Plex transcoding perfectly , roku ultra is still good and does the job I guess but can't do ai upscaling
