I've had one of these for years and have always really liked it. But unless you really want to use the gaming features, I would just get the ONN model that was here on FP a while ago. It was about $50 and I am basically just as satisfied with it. The Nvidia does have a spectacular remote but the ONN one is pretty good too.

This is the 2019 Pro version, so it's 6 years old and still the king of streaming boxes.

You can upscale everything but 4k on Nvidia shield.
That's pretty bad if you can't get HDR on YouTube . Nvidia shield is for people who want 100% working transcoding or direct play for atmos setups with proper receivers and TVs that support remix 4k or Blu-ray 1080p codecs with no issues. All players have issues but the Nvidia shield with Plex.
I never used those streaming services you mentioned but there is a reason why Plex is the best of the best and people still pay for it to this day .
My use case is direct stream for Dolby Vision from Emby. I am one of those Atmos people as well (11.2 in the house). I stopped Plex many many years ago when they started pushing all their cloud garbage. Yes - no YouTube HDR sucks but for the most part but I'd take what Emby/Plex/Jellyfin offer me over my YouTube issue, all day every day. S-tube is an app for YouTube that automatically skips "sponsored" portions of videos.

Excluding Apple TV I'd agree. Best solution for Google TV.
I bough an Apple TV last year to checkout out and compare. It has a great UI and there's a lot to like about them. I returned it in the end though because the Shield is far superior in it's AI upscaling capabilities and I could see a noticeable difference when watching HD content.

paid this price in 2020. still runs great. Netflix button is super annoying though. maybe I can disable it.. never thought about that.
There's a 3-d printed cover/case [makerworld.com] that blocks that button. I've considered prying out that stupid button.

Button Mapper will fix this issue. I've had the Netflix button disabled since day one.
....
I read that Button Mapper gets disabled each time the shield is reset. Has that been an issue?

I prefer my DUNE HOMATICS R 4K Plus 4GB S905X4 that I paid $85 last year shipped for half the price over this old tech.
Preference is subjective my friend🙂. I'll always choose the company that's given there product a decade of support and updates over one that will go to the trash bin when no support is there .

I like substance and consistency over short term fire 🔥 😉 EG: I STILL use my original shield pro from 2017 and just got a update few weeks ago.

nice, going to try that. my button mapper does disable when I have to power cycle which unfortunately happens once a month or two.

I'm sure apple is cool but will still fail plex
What do you mean fail plex? I use plex on it regularly without issue. Some people swear by Infuse as a player alternative that works well with plex servers, but I don't use it.

I've been generally happy with our Shield 4K Pro for many years, but the lack of hardware to properly handle AV1 has forced me to change our primary living room TV to the ONN 4K Pro units. For streaming applications (not gaming) they are the best device under $250 that I could find (they only cost $45 right now, but compete with the higher end units). I still use the shield in a place my family won't be affected by the hanging or other issues presented by more modern codecs.
Shield handles AV1 and ONN fails hard at plex.

This is false. I'm speaking from direct personal experience and I've been managing a Plex server for myself, friends and family for many years. The server has multiple hardware devices available for transcoding as needed. The ONN has never failed to negotiate the connection. With AV1 content the shield fails constantly.
This is user error.

It isn't. Shield doesn't have hardware for AV1, plain and simple. It also constantly fails to negotiate while dozens of other devices, primarily the ONN Pro, all work great with AV1 content and don't need any server side transcoding.

I agree the shield pro is a nice device, but it's a huge fail in this area and desperately needs a new hardware release. The shield pro should be $60 in 2025 and not $200.

By reset do you mean power cycle? It's never been an issue for me. Just confirmed on my unit.
