I've had one of these for years and have always really liked it. But unless you really want to use the gaming features, I would just get the ONN model that was here on FP a while ago. It was about $50 and I am basically just as satisfied with it. The Nvidia does have a spectacular remote but the ONN one is pretty good too.

This is the 2019 Pro version, so it's 6 years old and still the king of streaming boxes.

I'm surprised these havent fallen on price mucjvover the years. I bought the shield tv 2017 from Target for around $150. And then got 2 controllers for $25 each. Kodi seems to never work, always no stream loading or found. Also I used to play n64 roms on it.
I did the math. $150 in 2017 are the equivalent to $197 today. Don't forget covid, tariffs, etc have made inflation a real item to consider.

Nothing else plays all the movies on my server at full audio/video quality. I have one of these at each tv in my house and shop. I have a whole drawer full of other devices I've tried, including various apple tv models and the newest ONN pro box. They all fail at playing some movies and none of them have near the video quality of the Shield, especially when upscaling older stuff. A lot of my movies are full quality 4k+Dolby Atmos rips, and everything chokes on those except the Shield.

I've had the original Shield for almost a decade now... wow. It's the center of my gameroom entertainment and is the ultimate Plex player. For the retro gamers, this also use to be my emulation station before I swapped to a retro pi - which I only did for fun and to have a $10 pi zero I could move around TV to TV as needed.

The Apple TV 4K is a great streaming box EXCEPT for the fact that it doesn't have pass through audio which is extremely important for Plex. Apple doesn't see a need to help with home streaming I would imagine which is incredibly annoying and makes the Shield, etc very important.

The Plex and home server streaming crowd love this device but for the vast majority, an Apple TV has a better user experience. I own both devices and while I like the quality for both video and sound that the Shield Pro can output, the user experience just isn't there compared to Apple. NVIDIA has no interest in releasing an updated unit because they make bank on AI right now, so this product is an afterthought. But apparently it still sells well enough for them to keep making it.

Downvote me all you want, but the latest Apple TV 4K (WiFi + Ethernet) for $99 is a better deal for anyone who is not a Plex / Jellyfin / or other home server user. Which is most people.

Original model dropped in 2015 and the latest version(very different from OM) in 2019. And it is still the best media player. I have 4 of them in every room with tv/projector. 3g ram while very low nowdays but i dont encounter any problems
I wish I could say the same. I've had mine since 2017 and past few months one of them has started to get slow. It takes a couple minutes to respond when starting up now. It's time that they increase the memory and storage capacity on these. I agree that the quality is sound, but the fact that the RAM and the storage is on the low side is starting to show on those who are heavy users and have a lot of apps downloaded on it. I am using USB drives for additional storage but wish it was on board and not through a drive.

If I have the 2015 version is this one worth the upgrade? Some videos won't play on Kodi with the 2015 version (may be videos with Dolby Vision); all I get is a black screen. Does this version have been capabilities for video playback?

Anyone considering apple tv because you are a apple fanboy
Where Apple TV falls short (vs Shield) — what it may miss

Audio limitations: If your movies use lossless or high-end audio codecs — for example, Dolby TrueHD + Dolby Atmos (common in Blu-ray remuxes or MKV rips) — Apple TV's Plex client often can't passthrough those natively. Instead, Plex must transcode (or downmix) the audio — so you lose the "pure" audio track or Atmos metadata.

MKV / container & format support is tricky: There are multiple reports of MKV files failing to play via Plex on Apple TV (i.e. they spin forever), while converting to MP4 sometimes fixes the issue.

HDR / advanced video + container combo issues: For certain high-bitrate 4K remuxes, special HDR formats, or uncommon audio + video combinations, Apple TV + Plex sometimes struggle — especially compared to Shield, which tends to handle "everything" more reliably.

Dependence on your media's codec/container: With Apple TV, you often need your Plex library to be "well-behaved" (HEVC/H.264 + compatible audio + MP4 or supported container). Wildcard remuxed Blu-rays or MKVs with lossless audio are more likely to need transcoding or fail playback.
If you use Infuse or VidHub as your Plex client on Apple TV, it will be able to handle anything you throw at it.

Overpriced for what it is nowadays. Remember the bundles with a HDD and game controller?

Onn needs to step up their game and build a proper competitor for the nvidia shield at ~$100, it would sell like hot cakes...

I'm able to load third party apps like a YouTube client that blocks ads with the Shield. It's worth the price to block YouTube ads in my opinion. Maybe others can do that, but the Shield definitely can and has a fast UI that upscales my Plex content.
