This HVAC tune-up is best understood as a low-cost inspection and maintenance check, with some visits including disassembly, cleaning, testing, and written findings that can help spot failing parts before a breakdown. The strongest reports describe technicians checking filters, coils, drain lines, wiring, capacitors, and heat or cooling operation without pushing repairs. The main drawback is that many visits are described as visual only, with coil cleaning, deeper maintenance, or real repairs charged extra. Upsells, rescheduling, and occasional bait-and-switch pricing also come up, so it feels most useful when the local contractor is reputable and the scope is confirmed first.

  • The service can include disassemble, clean, and test steps for basement or attic systems.

  • Some experiences include limited upselling while technicians disassemble, clean, and test components.

  • The tune-up can produce a written inspection report that helps during a home sale.

  • The $8.88 promo can be used to keep an extended warranty valid when maintenance intervals are required.

  • The tune-up can function mainly as a lead-generation pitch that leads into upsells for repairs or replacements.

  • The service can be limited to operation checks or visual inspections without meaningful cleaning or refrigeration measurements.

  • The service can involve bait-and-switch pricing or missing promo confirmation during scheduling and billing.

  • The service can be rescheduled repeatedly or assigned to providers far from the Home Depot location.

I was contacted to schedule an appointment, but I was informed that the tune-up service costs $99. I explained that I submitted the request through Home Depot at the Black Friday sale price of $8.88 and wanted to confirm the price before scheduling. They reiterated that their current pricing is $99 and that there may have been some confusion about the different promo price. I told them I would pass since it wasn't the promotional price. It felt like a bait and switch.
Pricing starts today... Did you order today and get a call today already? Very odd. I have never had an issue in the past. Maybe just wait until tomorrow and try it again. Home Depot sub contracts this out and maybe you just got a newbie and you were the first person who had tried to use the promo.

Hvac guys are like auto mechanics. Find yourself a good trustworthy guy and use him.

You don't want a guy to come "tune up" your hvac for $9 just like you don't want a mechanic to tune up your car for $9.

I'm a contractor and I'm saying if you don't know a good hvac guy then it's best to find a friend to recommend someone. And then be sure to tell the hvac guy that you got his number from a friend. A good contractor wants his reputation to remain intact.

There are a lot of shady hvac guys who just want to sell you a new unit

I ordered less than an hour ago and received a text soon after to schedule the appointment. I'm in nyc, I would be surprised if I were the first person using the promo today. Could be a newbie or they just don't want to honor the promo price.

This is basically them upselling you with new furnace or other things. Honestly not worth it.
Might depend on whoever they subcontract to. I have done this for years and have also had family and friends do it. Never had any problems with upselling. The technicians were always good. At the most I ever got was "this component is starting to show signs of aging so just keep an eye on it for the next year or two, but it's OK for now."

I am sure they are hoping to find a few really bad parts or dead systems, but I have about a dozen engagements that have always been positive. They are usually happy to get their service sticker onto your system because they know there is about a 75% chance you will call them when something actually breaks in the future. I am in southeast Michigan. Maybe my experience is unusual because of who serves the area, but seriously no problems. I usually sit with the technician and chat during the service and watch what they are doing.

Personally, probably not. Unless you drew the hvac short straw and have a system that is failing quickly.

I might wait a few years. The only likely benefit would be from them vacuuming things out a bit (which you could do yourself).
New construction houses are loaded with dust. So they could clean the coil in the furnace. Also the condenser outside gets covered up in dirt pretty fast too.

You know what? I rescind my previous comment. Could be worth it just for the vacuum job.

In my experience, they call and schedule, and when they come perform the service you pay them. You can confirm at the time of the scheduling that you are getting the promotion price.

Has anyone done this before? Do they just check your heater and ac to see if its working well? Do the try to upsell you?
I did this a couple years ago. Would recommend staying away. Within a week of the "service" visit, I had major equipment issues that were not noted during the visit and I'm pretty confident were caused by the tech during the visit.

I always worry that these "tune-ups" may leave the unit in question in inferior condition it was in before it was messed with.

Good luck with this. I was rescheduled last minute four times and finally gave up. Will try again this year
