This HVAC tune-up is best understood as a low-cost inspection and maintenance check, with some visits including disassembly, cleaning, testing, and written findings that can help spot failing parts before a breakdown. The strongest reports describe technicians checking filters, coils, drain lines, wiring, capacitors, and heat or cooling operation without pushing repairs. The main drawback is that many visits are described as visual only, with coil cleaning, deeper maintenance, or real repairs charged extra. Upsells, rescheduling, and occasional bait-and-switch pricing also come up, so it feels most useful when the local contractor is reputable and the scope is confirmed first.

  • The service can include disassemble, clean, and test steps for basement or attic systems.

  • Some experiences include limited upselling while technicians disassemble, clean, and test components.

  • The tune-up can produce a written inspection report that helps during a home sale.

  • The $8.88 promo can be used to keep an extended warranty valid when maintenance intervals are required.

  • The tune-up can function mainly as a lead-generation pitch that leads into upsells for repairs or replacements.

  • The service can be limited to operation checks or visual inspections without meaningful cleaning or refrigeration measurements.

  • The service can involve bait-and-switch pricing or missing promo confirmation during scheduling and billing.

  • The service can be rescheduled repeatedly or assigned to providers far from the Home Depot location.

I use these promos twice a year. The Thanksgiving period is cheapest. Other times typically $30. I use them because it keeps my extended warranty valid for the 10 year period. Look at your warranty. It usually states maintenance must be performed at certain intervals. So, that's why I have been using the HD promo for about 5 years now. I have had my AC/heat pump system here in SW Florida vacuumed, some wires replaced, air filters replaced (I purchased them). Past spring one guy told me I needed a new capacitor, which I knew beforehand. He said about $350 bucks installed. But he knew my game and told me to buy the replacement and install it myself. Which I did couple days later for the cost of about $30. BTW, be careful what capacitors you buy. I use the made in USA brand. This is what I purchased for my Trane unit: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00SX6VN3Q

i have done this about 5 times in the last 20 years. I found that the inspection quality is very dependent on the integrity of the service-person. Of the 5 times, 2 were very good, one was OK, and 2 were just cursory and a scam. But I was never subject to a really hard sell.

What I've learned is that in my area, HD is contracting with a major HVAC company to perform these. That company has a mixed reputation, which is not unexpected. No doubt this is a loss for them to find additional work. While on the phone scheduling, they listed all the steps they would perform for the tune-up, and it sounded comprehensive.

Lowe's also had this as well. I think it all depends on your area and which company they have contract with, but yea it's essentially a lead generation that they're making $ off of the lead and sales.

So I did this. Here is my experience. Guy was nice. It appeared that they checked everything. However, he made up some non sense about air flow and referred to another business who sales pressured to come out. Reading the reviews of the first company, it said they do this to everyone. So if you go this route, I recommend a second opinion before repairing anything.

The scheduling lady for my local company just read me exactly what it entails, it's purely a visual inspection, there's no cleaning or maintenance at all. So, not a "tune-up", a $9 sales pitch.

I am a HVAC contractor in Orlando and there is 0 chance at $9 it would sustain my business. Just to show up at someone's door step rolling around in a service truck fuel/tolls/labor cost am already at a negative $45.00, only benefit I could probably see this being is retaining a customer for future service... however the likelihood of the same person calling for a maintenance at this price will use you again when an issue arises is probably 10%. As far as the deal goes if you get at least a good drain pan and drain line cleaning it's worth at least those $9.00.
then how did you even start your business since beginning? hanging out the flyers in the streets. expected to lose nothing to gain something?

Has anyone done this before? Do they just check your heater and ac to see if its working well? Do the try to upsell you?
I just schedule mine and then called to see what they " tune up " I specifically asked if they at least cleaned the coils since this is a service that originally cost 99.99. They basically look at your unit and try and get you to pay for things like the coil clean which they charge extra for. I told them not thank you.

The tune up is not a tune up it is an inspection. Any tune up like cleaning the coils I was told is extra.

I once did a $29.99 'tune up'...Showed up bored and lifeless and just took the indoor unit cover off, put it back and tried to upsell for a UV system, which is what most of them will do.

Should we even need it for a new construction house bought this year?
After living there for a year, you should do a cleaning/tune up every year. I also recommend getting a home maintenance guide like Home Maintenance for Dummies or whatever beginners book on that topic has the most & highest reviews

Such a waste of time and money. HD used AJ Perri to schedule the tune up in our area. The guy came for the tune up. He just opened the two covers, did visual inspections and gave recommendations to change the unit, its 20 years old. No 21 point inspection or cleanup etc. The guy completed his jjon within 5 minutes. When i asked what does the tune-up include, what do you expect for $9 Smilie. AJ Perri is a reputable company and i was expecting professional service but very disappointed. The technician should not know about the money part.
