This HVAC tune-up is best understood as a low-cost inspection and maintenance check, with some visits including disassembly, cleaning, testing, and written findings that can help spot failing parts before a breakdown. The strongest reports describe technicians checking filters, coils, drain lines, wiring, capacitors, and heat or cooling operation without pushing repairs. The main drawback is that many visits are described as visual only, with coil cleaning, deeper maintenance, or real repairs charged extra. Upsells, rescheduling, and occasional bait-and-switch pricing also come up, so it feels most useful when the local contractor is reputable and the scope is confirmed first.

  • The service can include disassemble, clean, and test steps for basement or attic systems.

  • Some experiences include limited upselling while technicians disassemble, clean, and test components.

  • The tune-up can produce a written inspection report that helps during a home sale.

  • The $8.88 promo can be used to keep an extended warranty valid when maintenance intervals are required.

  • The tune-up can function mainly as a lead-generation pitch that leads into upsells for repairs or replacements.

  • The service can be limited to operation checks or visual inspections without meaningful cleaning or refrigeration measurements.

  • The service can involve bait-and-switch pricing or missing promo confirmation during scheduling and billing.

  • The service can be rescheduled repeatedly or assigned to providers far from the Home Depot location.

They do nothing for the $8.88..They pull parts that they could clean and then quote $127 to clean the part, which takes about 5 minutes. Nothing but upsells.

Just had it done -a complete waste of time - the guy just turned a couple of screws, read some of the meters and kept telling me I need to pay to clean it that he was there to tune it and to schedule cleaning or maintenance.

My experience was actually positive. Home Depot used the same company that the previous home owners used before me and looking them up, they have a 4.8 out of 5 with 1K+ reviews. He checked the air filter (easy), the humidifier water pad/filter (which I didn't even know was a thing) which had rusted out and disintegrated/fused to the basin and cleaned it out. I saw the part number still visible. He said he had the part in the van for $55, but I found it half price at Home Depot and a 2 pack for around $44 at Amazon so I declined him replacing it with his part, but he did show me how to replace it. Amazon has a customer video showing how to do it, but it was nice that he offered.

There was a check list of things to go through, which I'll edit in later. All in all, it took about an hour.

The person didn't try to pressure me to buy anything, he wore coverings on his boots, and he drove in the terrible Midwest snow today to do the job.

Edit: This is the Tune-up list (which, even if I knew to look for all of these, my basic home DIY self wouldn't have at least two of the tools that he used to check/measure the furnace efficiency and likelihood of parts failing.

I wouldn't trust HD to install a dishwasher let alone mess with my HVAC. LOL

The home depot contractor did the tune up for few minutes. During the visit, he offered $5.99 for duct cleaning. He said this is a home depot for only 100 customers, but he said he still could put me in the list. I googled it, but i could not find the same promo. They called me to schedule it, but they did not send the work order that I need to sign. After they did the service, I called them for the bill. They billed me for $599 instead of $5.99. They said I agreed on the phone, they said they have the transcript. I reported to home depot near my home. Home depot store manager called them, but they have not called them back. The contractor really scammed me.

Stay far away from this. Bait and switch. My HVAC created problems after the service (which was a farce), trying to sell me to a new one. I am still scrambling to get it fixed

Has anyone done this before? Do they just check your heater and ac to see if its working well? Do the try to upsell you?
$8.88 is just enough to pay for gas. Use water and a brush to clean the outdoor condenser. Replace the start capacitor and start relay every 5 years. Plenty of YT tutorial videos. Be sure to turn off the AC breaker when working with high voltage.
