$16 a roll seems expensive or is this a better brand or level of filament?

Polymaker is a higher-end filament brand, and their PLA Pro is the gold standard for PLA+. That said, even the budget brands have similar quality filaments these days. Duramic PLA+ is just as good as Polymaker, and cheaper. A couple years ago, you needed to get Polymaker, etc if you wanted quality and consistency. Not the case anymore. This isn't a bad price for PLA+, though. It would be overpriced if it were regular PLA.

It didn't used to be expensive even a year ago - filament prices have come crashing down and cheaper manufacturers have upped their quality and consistency. Polymaker is supposed to be a premium product, made in USA, etc. But I've run several rolls of it and couldn't begin to tell you what advantages it has over cheaper Chinese filaments from any number of brands. Their PLA Pro is indeed very tough, but others make tough PLA also.

Since you seem like you have been doing this a while. I use a bambu with the AMS. Do you know if the cardboard holders work ok? Everything I've gotten so far from either bambu or sunlu has been plastic holders.

I been using the cardboard rolls fine in the ams. Took it to the garage recently to blow out any dust as I do with all my electronics periodically. Didn't see anything at all. You can print rings that attach to the rolls if your concerned

In addition to general love for Costco, this bundle is guaranteed to be manufactured in USA. Otherwise Polymaker purchased in the US is a mix of US and imported, with no real way to guarantee that it is made in USA.

These are labeled as "AMS Compatible". I think they are now gluing the rims.
