This 24TB BarraCuda is drawing attention for its very low cost per terabyte and strong value on paper, especially for bulk storage or RAID setups. The price has been called tempting enough to justify extra testing, and the drive is seen as roughly half the price of higher tier options. The main concern is reliability, with repeated reports of DOA units, clicking drives, and early failures, plus a two year warranty that feels short for a large hard drive. It looks best suited to light use after thorough testing.

  • NAS builders who will full-scan each drive before deployment, because the low price makes extra tested spares practical for RAID replacement.

  • Light-duty storage users who do not need long service life, because these drives are described as fine for light use but not for the long term.

  • Value-focused bulk archivists who can tolerate a shorter warranty, because the per-terabyte price is unusually low for a 24TB drive.

  • Anyone needing a drive that can be trusted straight out of the box, because DOA units, clicking drives, and reallocated sectors are reported.

  • People building always-on storage for long-term reliability, because these drives are described as failing around the warranty period.

  • Users who want a proven heavy-write NAS drive, because reliability under daily writes past 180 days is still being questioned.

Seagate's Barracuda drives are absolute junk these days. They have a 2 year warranty, and if you are lucky that is about how long they will last before dying.

Better off to spend the money towards a quality drive.

How bad are these really? If one were to run a full test (full drive scan, which probably takes 2 days on this large a drive) and only keep the drives that pass, are they really that bad? The price is very very tempting, one could buy extra drives (also fully tested) ready to be popped into a RAID array upon a failure. I've only ever used fully tested by me WDs which I bought new, and have had stellar success with them, but dang is $10/TB attractive!

Like they say if it sounds too good to be true prob is LOL. Anyways, there is a reason they keep shortening the warranty I remember when they all had 5 year warranties then they cut down that to 3 and now down to 2 which is coincidently or not when most of these drives go bad IME.

I mean this is my own experience but in my current rig, all the Seagate drives have failed as u can see using it's own software diagnostic tools, where the WD and Hitachi drives not to mention all my SSD are still running fine Mad
The 8TB drives which is one of the failed drives was prone to high failure rates supposedly, so don't know if they got any better since have avoided them since had so many failed drives from Seagate. Just looking at the reviews on the Newegg page for this don't look like they got any better most of the comments seem to be DOA drive or failed after few months EEK!

That's an odd assertion to make about a design that hasn't even been on the market for 1 year. Besides the name, these share little in common with any prior Barracuda.

It's a new technology, so it's hard to say. Most of the complaints seem to be about DOA drives, so I would suggest testing them thoroughly.
