This BLACK+DECKER portable air conditioner is best understood as a quick, easy-to-install cooling option with a window kit and inverter compressor. The main appeal is portability and simpler setup, especially compared with heavier window units or mini splits. The biggest debate centers on efficiency, since single hose portable units are described as less efficient and more likely to run hot, while dual hose designs are defended as keeping the cold side and hot side separated. The 12,000 BTU listing also clashes with an 8,000 BTU SACC rating, so the real cooling capacity is worth checking before buying.

Common Questions (4)

  • A dual-hose setup is more efficient than a single-hose portable because it keeps condenser intake and exhaust air separated, instead of pulling cooled room air out and replacing it with warm outside air. The main caveat is that if the intake and exhaust are too close together, some warm exhaust can be recirculated.

  • Yes. A single-hose portable AC is less efficient because it uses room air to cool the condenser and then exhausts that air outside, which pulls warm air back into the room through leaks and openings.

  • Yes, portable units like this are easier to install quickly than window units, and the window kit makes setup more straightforward. That convenience is the main tradeoff for the lower efficiency of portable designs.

  • The listing shows 12,000 BTU, but the more comparable cooling rating is 8,000 BTU SACC. That means the advertised BTU and the standardized cooling output are different, so shoppers should compare the SACC number when judging real-world capacity.

Exactly.. thank you. I've been saying this forever but always get downvoted with some bs about not knowing about pressure levels yada yada. Simply put, I know how a fan works — one side in, one side out, and an ac unit has 2 fans. One for cooling condenser and one for cooling the room. The single hose units are blowing OUT hot air from condenser… so the air for its IN has to come from somewhere. If you have 2 hose unit, good — the cooling of the condenser and air pressure is isolated to the outside, like a traditional window unit. If 1 hose like this then the IN air for the condenser is coming from the room you're cooling and whatever air leaks that are in the room (under door, windows, vents on the wall, etc), which is undoing most of the cooling the AC puts out. Unless technology has changed for these units let me know. Otherwise this is one of the most inefficient design. Get one and find out for yourself.
Here is an example of dual hose , look at the picture https://www.amazon.com/Hisense-Po...B0D94WL44L

See what I meant that hot air exhaust hose next to the intake hose. If the two hoses are away from each other in distance, I can buy in. But this design? If you put you hand outtside the exhaust hose, you can feel it's blowing warm air, and sucked by the intake hose as "fresh air"

Yes that is accurate that it pulls in warmer air... but calling it a gimmick is like calling bothering to close the windows when running the AC also a gimmick....

The flow of air without dual hose means that it's completely changing over the room's air like once an hour! How could you imagine that to be more 'efficient' than slightly lower compressor efficiency? seriously?!?!

Sure, between sucking exhaust hot air as intake and
sucking external air from unsealed windows or
opened doors due to single hose resulted external higher pressure, I'd vote for the latter, simple intuition.

I mean what 's the point of sending all the hot air
exhausted right back into the AC, that sounds pretty
efficient to consume energy by all accounts.

Serously, am I the only one see the intuition?

Everyone sees the intuition, sees the 'not considering all the variables' logic to the intuition, and is trying to help you....

The air intake to the AC does not get mixed into the room air, it cools the coils and gets pumped back out. Nearly all air conditioners pull the air they are cooling from the room, regardless of type. It's just that single hose also pulls teh air it uses to extract waste heat from the compressor from the room as well. So, like, emptying the equivalent of the entire room of air every hour should be one of those common sense bad efficiency logic things. So, sure, your intuition adds, like, 1% efficiency at a guess, since the system is designed to use warm outside air to make it even warmer with waste heat. But it loses out on the massive efficiency boost of not having to constantly have warm air pumped into the room to replace the air pumped out with waste heat. The math says it's more efficient to keep them separated with the cold side cold and the hot side hot!

If you're stuck on being in proven right mode, yes it's significantly more efficient to separate the exhaust and intake as much as possible. But the same practicality that allows for an unquestionably inferior product like single hose units calls for efficiency loss for easier installation. But there are some dual hose that simply put a piece of plastic sticking out maybe 6 inches between the two because beyond that the benefit is minimal for how quickly it mixes with outside air. But even the lack of that efficiency improvement is a world away from it being a 'gimmick,' since it's still massively more efficient than a single hose.

yes that's ok. think about how close the exhaust and intake of traditional window air units are also, and they do a fantastic job of cooling. Also with the 2 hose system, you have the option of getting creative and connecting another hose from the hardware store to one of the existing hose so that both openings are farther away from the other..or even put a deflector on each opening to pull/push air in opposite direction of each other
