The Panasonic UB-820 has a few advantages over a console like ps5 and xbox.
The Xbox often has issues playing 100GB discs, so basically any newer 4K UHD discs.
The Panasonic will play Dolby Vision discs in Dolby Vision, xbox and ps5 wont.
The Panasonic will be whisper quiet compared to the Xbox/ps5 disc drive and fan.

Panasonic has an HDR Optimizer function for HDR10-only discs. It can help high peak brightness films look better on OLEDs with typical OLED peak brightness.

Sony X700 is also a good option but those tend to have a freezing issue

Xbox does not do Dolby vision for discs. Only gaming and streaming.

Very minor, but if you have people in your household who are not the savviest with tech (older folks, kids, spouses), since this is a dedicated device, it's more easily navigable.
Even if you have a PS5 or Xbox remote, the interface for this isn't anywhere near as busy as those platforms.

What does a high end dedicated bluray player do that a game console cant?

This really holds its value. I paid $399.95 for this at Amazon November 30, 2019. It's as good as a checking account.

Xbox does Dolby Vision. PS5 doesn't. The consoles are also completely quiet. I use my PS5 and it doesn't make a peep after the disc is done loading up. It's only loud during the initial startup. After that, there's zero sound from the console.

Outstanding Blu-ray player, but pricey. Great price since these sales only come around a few times a year. Much nicer than using a gaming console, but I can understand those who want to save money.

The other option is the 420 version which is cheaper but avoids the downsides of the Sony (ended up giving it to a friend)

What is the difference from OP, other than $150? no HDR10+? Is that a big deal for last year's Samsung's QD-OLED?

I have the same Samsung QD-OLED you probably do if it's from last years deal from Samsung.com -- 65" QE1D. The TV does not have Dolby Vision but does have HDR10+ support, and the 420 does not have DV but does have HDR10+, so it's actually more suitable for this TV.

Some people say buying the 820 is "future-proofing" but I don't plan on upgrading the TV any time soon. I've got the much cheaper Panasonic 4K player, the $100 one (now $150), and it works perfectly for me (DP-UB154P-K).
