The Books contain some of the same characters, but are quite different from the movie series sharing the same name. For example, in the books the Vikins have always lived with and trained the dragons -- and Toothless can talk.

These books are great, by the way. If you have a 7-12 year old that hasn't read this series and is into fantasy it would be a great gift.

I don't have dragons but I used the training methods on my huskies and it was crazy how well it worked.

Too elementary for a 13yo? My son loved the movies, but with the recommended grades 3-7, I'm wondering if the books might be uninteresting.

I'd say so. I had bought these for one of my kids who absolutely LOVED the movies. They never got through the first book. Not sure if it was the artwork or what but they refused. Tried our next kid on them, probably around 5th grade, but he had already completely read Harry Potter and the Hobbit at that point. No interest at all. I would probably say 3rd to 5th grade and they'd be more likely to enjoy the books if they haven't seen the movies. I think for our kids, it was hard for the books to live up to the movies, even though we had only heard good things about the book series. I was sad they just couldn't get in to the books.

Thanks for the detailed reply. I think my son will likely respond similarly.

I'm on the second to last book. It has been one hell of a ride. I didn't expect much but ended up really liking it. Now I find the movies hollow in comparison.
