M4 if you have the moneys - it has a better processor, supports an additional display, has better webcam, is newer and will receive longer upgrades. That being said you won't be disappointed with the M2 if that's what what you can afford in your budget and is beating everything else in general experience at this price point especially on build quality.

M4 will get updates a couple years longer and is faster. Plus can output to two external displays.

If you're doing anything more than basic, pay the extra $150 and go for the M4. M2 Pro... I would do that deal. But not base M2.

The 256GB SSD on this model is much slower than the 512GB and higher options.

Is the M4 Macbook Air @ $750 a better deal or is this THE cheap Macbook of the holidays?

Depends on the use case. If it's a younger child I would give them this deal but the M4 is probably the best deal overall

I had an M1 8GB ram. Would hav kept if it was 16. M2 is definitely more adequate for everyday use, unless you run VM's or do complex coding/compiling.

Someone talk me into buying an Apple laptop, try please as I'm fairly ignorant.

I love my iPhone, work tablet that isn't used, is the apple OS very restrictive???

Almost all programs have a windows version, not all have apple OS.

I can do ANYTHING to my PC; highly customizable. How restrictive is apple OS compared to windows; I want to customize anything I can (I build gaming computers for a hobby).

Just curious on everyone's opinion. BTW I am NOT concerned with security, I do my own quite well.

Thanks

EDIT: Simple research shows I'm sticking with Windows, limitations of control and stupid pricing, sorry apple.

I've actually been a member for about 20 years but had to rejoin because my old email got hacked Although they showed as $250 off for the M4 MacBook air I believe the price had previously dropped to 799 what are your feelings that the M4 Price will drop even further once the M5 comes out

I have no idea how Apple plans on competing with this product with their cutdown A20 laptop

I sold my M2 for $700ish to Best Buy a year ago (paid $899 6 mo after launch) because the 8GB was killing me. Thinking of picking this back up.

I'd say you probably did fine. That thing has a great screen and keyboard. The M1 is still great. It's only going to show some age if you're a power user doing more intense things such as VMs, compiling code, gaming, intense video work, etc. I'd only be a bit worried about the battery. Might want to keep an eye on that but otherwise!

When my GF wants me to fix or tweak her Macbook Pro I f-ing hate it. They are different in ways that make no sense to me but like anything, if you use it enough you'll probably get used to it, I haven't because I hate the software. The machine itself is impressive, especially the screen, and has been a workhorse but it's had its fair share of problems, she's probably spent $1500-$2000 to fix various issues such as a bad motherboard. Anecdotal sure, but for such an expensive machine I've been disappointed with its reliability and the cost to fix it when it does break. Long winded way of saying you should probably just stick with a Windows machine unless you are a photographer or something similar who actually needs that screen.
