This DeWALT thickness planer is valued as a heavy duty tool for finish carpentry, rough or hard stock, and tricky grain where straight knives can tear out. The included wings help reduce snipe, the extra blades are useful, and a digital thickness gauge can make board settings more precise. The stand with wheels adds mobility in a small shop, but the planer is very loud, throws a lot of sawdust, and is very heavy. It feels like a strong fit when the extra accessories and shop setup matter.

  • The included wings can help reduce snipe when planing longer stock.

  • The helical cutter setup can reduce tearout on challenging grain areas.

  • The digital thickness gauge can be set down to 0.001 inch for board-by-board control.

  • The wheeled stand can make a small workspace workable by moving the planer out of the way.

  • The planer can be extremely loud and it can spit a lot of sawdust during feeding.

  • The planer is very heavy, so garage delivery and careful handling may matter for safe arrival.

  • The wings may not completely eliminate snipe even when they are dialed in.

  • The unit can fail and stop working, with at least one report of it being dead now.

I just bought this 10 minutes ago from HD with a stand for $699 and thought it was a deal. Thinking about getting this instead! Damn.

If you need the stand, then the HD deal is good as well. The stand works out to be $150 - so, $30 saving on the stand as well.

Yeah I'm going to keep the stand. I'm also picking up in store so hopefully no damage in shipping. Easy enough to refuse if damaged in transit in-store.

Yes. Yes we are and always have.

That wasn't a price comparison as much as a stroll down memory lane. Nobody expects to get this for sub$400 now. Maybe something with a 4-handle but that's hearsay not here-say.

I mean, it's still relevant. Good to know lows people have gotten in the past, if nothing else for reference. Tbh 375 back then is likely comparable to 500 or so today, but I appreciate the info unless its somebody bragging or waiting for it to drop back to the same wild low.

This is great for pros and finish carpenters with challenging material.

For the average weekend warrior a Rigid or Wen at half the price does the job well. With my rigid I've fixed nearly anything like shelves, fences and benches. Even smaller desktop stuff if you allow some margin at edge for sniping and resin for knots.

But for super hard material and doing things in bulk consistently like weathered wood for antique look or premium wall panels the dewalt is the way to go.

Good deal specially with the add ons. If you are ordering, see if you can get in garage delivery. It is very heavy.

For those who never used a planer but watched carpentry YouTubers using it: this is extremely loud and spitting a ton of sawdust at each feed. You'll need some ear protection and boxes of garbage bags, too.
