It soon starts peeling and flaking, leaving little plastic debris all over the place. It's worth going out of the way to buy another product that doesn't have it just to avoid the hassle.

Calm down Nancy, the material on these doesnt flake like cheaper stuff. Ive had mine for years and theyre fine. Additionally they come with a set of soft cloth ear cups you can put on if you dont like the fake leather ones.

Yeah i have the Cloud Alpha S, bought Jan 2021 so basically 5 years old and they show zero flaking or cracking or anything. Not all synthetic leather is equal. It isnt that cheap stuff they put on walmart gaming chairs. For example, Mercedes has been using "MB Tex" their in house synthetic, for literal decades with no issues.

Still rocking 2 sets of hyperx headsets from years ago and love the flip up mics to mute. Do they no longer make mics like that? These look fixed.

My HyperX Cloud II has been flaking for a while, but I did get it eight years ago.
EDIT: And the 3.5 mm connection is a bit unstable as well.

These don't flip up, but they're not fixed in place either. The boom plugs into the earcup using a headphone-style TRS jack.
