The SoloCam S40 is a solar outdoor camera best known for its built in spotlight and color night vision, with a slightly larger solar panel than the S220. The image quality and wireless setup get strong praise, and the lack of subscription fees keeps the value appealing at $40. The main concern is durability, since water intrusion has been linked to battery failure, dead units, and LED problems after one to three years. Charging can also struggle in shade, winter, or awkward mounting spots, so it works best where it gets steady sun.
Common Questions (4)
Water intrusion is a recurring issue on some units after 1-2 years outdoors and can lead to battery problems, LED diode failure, or a dead camera. Other units have lasted 3.5 to 5 years outside without leaking, so climate, sun exposure, and mounting conditions may affect longevity.
It can struggle in fall and winter or when mounted in direct sun in a way that still leaves it undercharged. Some setups stay charged for years, but others need an external solar panel or reduced recording sensitivity/exclusion zones to avoid draining the battery faster than it recharges.
Clear caulk on the seams is suggested as a simple preventative step, and some users go further by removing silicone sleeves and using PlastiDip to reduce water seepage and sun damage. Silicone sleeves can also trap moisture and keep the camera wet much longer after rain.
Yes. The S40 includes a built-in spotlight for color night vision, and that spotlight is one of the main differences versus the S220, which does not have it. The S40 also has a slightly larger solar panel.

Get the S220 over this. The WIFI is better. Yes you get a spotlight but it will drain your battery faster when it randomly activates at night. I would sell mine if I didn't get it as a free replacement over my E40s I got rid of. You will need Homebase 3 for it to work best. Otherwise prepare to buffer and constantly fail watching video alerts when recording is in process.
No water issue with mine like the E40. Yellowing occurs on the spotlight lens and typically peeling off the solar panel within the first year for me in 90% sun all year round. The battery will drain if you select anything other than best battery mode.
First is a 2 pack for $31.99 There a coupon bring it down to $28.xx (I paid $32.99 last year)

You can use the camera without any additional payments, thus "rent" free.
You can purchase additional services for the camera aka subscription.
If you have a Ring alarm - you pay zero additional charges! The price of the alarm monitoring is much cheaper than that of other monitoring companies.
I guess if you have a fire stick you view any subscription to any of the additional services offered as "rent"? What about a car? Is the cost of electricity (or gas) "rent" so that you can use the hardware that you purchased?
