The SoloCam S40 is a solar outdoor camera best known for its built in spotlight and color night vision, with a slightly larger solar panel than the S220. The image quality and wireless setup get strong praise, and the lack of subscription fees keeps the value appealing at $40. The main concern is durability, since water intrusion has been linked to battery failure, dead units, and LED problems after one to three years. Charging can also struggle in shade, winter, or awkward mounting spots, so it works best where it gets steady sun.

  • Water intrusion can occur after about one to three years outdoors and can lead to battery issues and LED diode failure.

  • Solar charging and connectivity can fail depending on mounting and solar panel location.

  • The S40 can drain battery faster when the night spotlight activates randomly.

  • Video playback from SD card can take a long time to load for solar camera setups.

I've been using silicone sleeves on my older cameras and also got them for my S330 that I got in July.

I don't hang them, just put them on a log or box out in the yard.... never had any issues so far. I don't know if the sleeves help, but it covers everything up except the solar panel....

Just went out the other day and dug my cameras out of the snow.
Didn't realize they have these sleeves. I will get one for my S220 I already have and the S40 I just got here. I see they are super cheap on Aliexpress, so will probably get them from there. Thanks!

Far be it for me to defend eufy, their app makes these otherwise good cameras total trash, but i have had 2 of these S40 cameras outside in NW Ohio for over 4 years and they're still charging today!

Anyone knows the difference between this and the s220?
This appears to be the s230 if it has the spot light. Probably model number for Best Buy I'm assuming. Just like Costco has its own

Mine like this has been working for 4-5 years.

I recently put a newer model with ai on my backporch. It's cool. Eufy is much better than the Flock associated brands.
No issues with mine either.

Anyone know how these compare to Tapo Magcam? Have one and it takes forever to load video from SD card for playback.
I returned the Eufy and I like their normal cams and still use them. The Eufy had connectivity problems where I had mounted it and charging issues because of the solar panel location.
The Tapo cam stays connected to my Wifi, stays 100% charged all of the time so I was able to turn up all of the sensitivity settings and anything else that normally eats the battery and then there's the picture quality: it's like night and day and to me that is the biggest selling point. This was my first Tapo cam and as much as I don't like solar powered ones if I had to get another it would be one of these.

Edit: I also forgot to mention the detection settings, I don't think eufy has vehicle notification, my normal ones don't. Tapo does and it works well

Interesting that several people report water intrusion. I have had 2 outdoors for 3.5 years and they appear like new. Could it be climate related? We don't get snow here. Additionally, one of them is in the shade and still never runs out of juice. Again, perhaps because I am in a sunny state? Regardless, I hate paying subscription fees so Ring et al. are out for me. I do have Ubiquity cameras too (cannot be wifi jammed). I'd say this is a great deal.

I've had a terrible experience with this camera. Failed after a few months and eufy support was horrible. They didn't take any accountability and offered a laughable 5% discount on a new one from their site. Such a shame

Not sure if this is even worth the discounted $40 price. Water gets into these units at the 1-2 year mark when installed outside and it'll cause battery issues and the LED diodes to fail.
Mine are well over 2 years old. Honestly, I don't know mine are not leaking. All I know is they all still work (4). The light has discolored but still works. For $40, I may buy some extras.

I own both. This thing is huge vs the S220 and the mount is terrible. It's not the same as the usual mounts.

Get the S220 over this. The WIFI is better. Yes you get a spotlight but it will drain your battery faster when it randomly activates at night. I would sell mine if I didn't get it as a free replacement over my E40s I got rid of. You will need Homebase 3 for it to work best. Otherwise prepare to buffer and constantly fail watching video alerts when recording is in process.

No water issue with mine like the E40. Yellowing occurs on the spotlight lens and typically peeling off the solar panel within the first year for me in 90% sun all year round. The battery will drain if you select anything other than best battery mode.

Eufy is the best brand that doesn't require a subscription to use all its built-in features because the camers work fairly well for a good price, and more importantly it doesn't share all your data and give full access without any consent (or option to opt out) to police/gov like RING does who partnered with FLOCK cameras a couple months ago, so now all RING cameras can now be accessed by any police or gov agent who wants to see whats on all your RING cameras without any warrant or asking you first which is an insane breach of your rights!

Just went out the other day and dug my cameras out of the snow.
I tried the silicone jackets at first which seemed like a good deal for only $15 for a 2-pack (and it is if you're solely concerned with sun damage only), but if you look at it from an engineering perspective they will actually make your camera a lot more prone to water damage because water gets trapped between the jacket and the camera all the way around it where it can't easily evaporate like it would if there was no jacket, so now water has a much longer time to seep into all the cracks before it evaporates. Mine that had the silicone jacket on them were staying wet for over 8 hours after a light rain vs 10 minutes to air dry without a jacket covering them. That's when I instead chose to remove the silicone jackets and I sprayed each camera with black PlastiDip (rubberized waterproof/sunproof coating that can be peeled off years later with no damage to whatever it was sprayed onto) to make it less noticeable as well as totally waterproof. I just used blue painter's tape to mask over the front lens/lights with a little oval of tape, as well asl over the solar panel, so when I peeled the tape off after spraying 4 heavy coats the entire camera was encased in a single uniform waterproof removeable coating to eliminate the water seepage in any cracks which tended to happen to some other people from all the reviews I saw. I've done this to all my cameras and they have all worked great for 1 year so far. It has also prevented all the yellowing of the plastic from sun damage that everyone complained about. The only problem I will probably have is the clear coating that Eufy puts on the solar panel seems to deteriorate over a couple years and gets milky and sometimes peels up which blocks most sun so when that happens I'll peel off that coating and the solar panels should get full power again. I don't move the cameras at all so the only variable is the sun's different position in the sky throughout the year which changes between summer and winter but my cameras and solar panels are all horizontal so it should be getting almost identical sun exposure no matter what time of year it is, therefore since my cameras are currently only charging about 20% as much when it is 40F outside as when it was 100F outside during summer, I'd say cold temps significantly affect their ability to charge so plan to get an external solar panel if your camera is in a high traffic area, or use the exclusion zone feature to only record in a certain section of the camera's view to reduce unnecessary recording and power usage, and maybe crank down the sensitivity and select the "record humans only" (rather than all movement from animals, cars, etc) so the camera won't be triggered by as many false movements and waste as much power as it would if you had it set to "record all movement".
