The SoloCam S40 is a solar outdoor camera best known for its built in spotlight and color night vision, with a slightly larger solar panel than the S220. The image quality and wireless setup get strong praise, and the lack of subscription fees keeps the value appealing at $40. The main concern is durability, since water intrusion has been linked to battery failure, dead units, and LED problems after one to three years. Charging can also struggle in shade, winter, or awkward mounting spots, so it works best where it gets steady sun.

  • Water intrusion can occur after about one to three years outdoors and can lead to battery issues and LED diode failure.

  • Solar charging and connectivity can fail depending on mounting and solar panel location.

  • The S40 can drain battery faster when the night spotlight activates randomly.

  • Video playback from SD card can take a long time to load for solar camera setups.

I own both. This thing is huge vs the S220 and the mount is terrible. It's not the same as the usual mounts.

Get the S220 over this. The WIFI is better. Yes you get a spotlight but it will drain your battery faster when it randomly activates at night. I would sell mine if I didn't get it as a free replacement over my E40s I got rid of. You will need Homebase 3 for it to work best. Otherwise prepare to buffer and constantly fail watching video alerts when recording is in process.

No water issue with mine like the E40. Yellowing occurs on the spotlight lens and typically peeling off the solar panel within the first year for me in 90% sun all year round. The battery will drain if you select anything other than best battery mode.
I agree that this is way too large. The only positive of this vs the S220 is the spotlight and maybe the solar panel is a bit bigger on this one so if you are in a high traffic area then this will probably be OK vs the S220 which can't recharge quite as much which means you'd either need an external solar panel or you'd have to turn down the recording settings, set it to record only humans or only certain movement rather than all movement, or use the exclusion zone to only record a section of the camera's vew to reduce unwanted recordings.

Not sure if this is even worth the discounted $40 price. Water gets into these units at the 1-2 year mark when installed outside and it'll cause battery issues and the LED diodes to fail.
Looks like water getting in the unit is a common problem.

Any recommendations? I've been hesitant to buy an offbrand after the last one I got was literally a sticker of a solar panel mounted on metal. And Amazon rejected my review of the same (but did take the return, at least) so I couldn't warn others.
I got two different brands, both work about the same -
First is a 2 pack for $31.99 There a coupon bring it down to $28.xx (I paid $32.99 last year)

Amazon.com : Solar Panel for Ring Camera, 2 Pack 4W Solar Charger Compatible with Rings Spotlight &All-New Stick Up Outdoor Cam Battery, 10ft Long Cable with USB-C to Ring Barrel Plug Adapter : Patio, Lawn & Garden

The other one is no longer available.

I was going to say the same thing. I hate subscriptions but if you have a home alarm with Ring, it all makes sense and all your ring devices are covered by their warranty as long as you are a sub.
Same here. Between the alarm and camera's, the price is decent and less than I was paying from a "pro" system.

If you are using a few cameras and don't mind a subscription price, I've been using Ring for years. They have been rock solid.
If you're ok with buying a Ring camera then paying rent to use it, its a great deal! Roll Eyes (Sarcastic)

Any SD'er worth their salt is going to hate a subscription but many of us were paying upwards of 200 some even in the 400-500 range for home alarm monitoring. Ring home monitoring is less than most other commercial options. They have a cool kit you can use for your old legacy system like Brinks/ADT/etc. So then camera stuff is pretty much free. And most homeowners insurance discounts will slightly offset that too.

Here comes the guy with the dog as an alarm... those vet bills tho...Big Grin

I have an S220 out in the elements. It's been fine for about 1.5 years now. You have me concerned. Do you know where the water gets into the cam? Is it around the solar panel or the sides? I wonder if I could put a little clear caulk around those areas to keep the water out...
I did buy this one. I think this price is more than fair.
Same question for me. I have three S220s and want to seal it up as well. Wouldn't hurt just to clear calk each seam I guess lol

Agree. Clear caulking the seams really can't hurt anything.

When they disabled the arm/disarm feature in the RING app w/o a paid subscription, I quit Ring. They rendered my entire Ring ecosystem I used for years useless since I need to arm and disarm remotely. Very petty of them to do that. I paid for their product and they are forcing me to rent it to use it. No thanks. I use a combination of different systems, none of which I pay monthly fees for. If people continue to shrug off paying subscriptions to use products they bought, its only going to get worse for consumers. If companies offer paid services, or you know you have to pay going into it, thats different than buying something then 10 years later they prevent it from working the same way.

Yeah, that's total crap and such a jerk move. I'd be working on an ESP32 and some optocouplers and that keypad. Remote Arm/Disarm enabled.

Were the e40s not good? Ordered them for Black Friday but can barely find any reviews of them

Rent? Really?
You can use the camera without any additional payments, thus "rent" free.
You can purchase additional services for the camera aka subscription.
If you have a Ring alarm - you pay zero additional charges! The price of the alarm monitoring is much cheaper than that of other monitoring companies.

I guess if you have a fire stick you view any subscription to any of the additional services offered as "rent"? What about a car? Is the cost of electricity (or gas) "rent" so that you can use the hardware that you purchased?
