This 77 inch Panasonic Z8 is being framed as a strong value OLED with premium audio and picture processing at a lower price than comparable LG C5 deals. The built in Technics tuned speaker system, Dolby Vision and HDR10 plus support, natural color tuning, and strong upscaling for sub 4K content stand out, along with the 144 hertz panel and bright, high end feel. The main knocks are Fire TV, which is widely seen as clunky, ad heavy, and best bypassed with an external streamer, and the TV is also described as thick and weighty. A solid option if you want a feature rich OLED and can ignore the built in smart platform.

  • The TV can appear dimmer than the LG C5 in some comparisons, which may matter in brighter rooms.

  • The Fire TV interface can feel slow and cluttered, with frequent ads or previews reported.

  • The TV can be physically thick due to its speaker setup, which can be a drawback for side-profile aesthetics.

  • Panasonic's future support risk can affect warranty, software updates, and long-term reliability if the company exits the TV business again.

I have the entry-level Panasonic Z85A 55" OLED tv and I'm honestly quite confused - I also have a 48" Samsung S90D (which is their high-end stuff and supposedly one of the brightest OLED's you can get) but when watching the same Youtube HDR content at night, the Panasonic looks noticeably brighter than the Samsung (so the Panasonic looks better). I've adjusted all the settings and the "budget" Panasonic OLED outshines my high-end Samsung S90D. I love watching these "Tokyo night walk" HDR videos and the way the neon signs look on the Panasonic puts a huge smile on my face.
Because you need to watch the "Seoul night walk" video with Samsung. /s
But seriously, probably because the 48 Samsung Oleds are not QD-Oled, only 55/65/77 are.

Yes but this b5 is the best iteration yet, its a VERY solid tv. If I was broke I would buy it on a killer sale, but would rather a c4/c5.
Is the b5 77 inch at $1300 a good deal and worth getting over this?

Wow.... Panasonic. Haven't seen that name since my plasma screen days
Wow, looks like it supports both Dolby Vision and HDR10+. That's somewhat rare.
The only downside I see is that it runs Fire TV, which I think is not great.

I grabbed one. We do not plan on watching shows or movies on this so FireOS isn't a deal breaker. This will be just gaming on PS5 and Switch 2 consoles. Hopefully this will keep the kids out of my space. I am glad I held off on the 77 c5. I won't have to buy a sound bar now either.

FireTV I could live with, but the built-in soundbar is a no-go for me. Adds too much to the TV aesthetically and I don't need it, as I already have a Sonos soundbar, but this seems like a good deal if those don't bother you.

Why does it have to be firetv instead of googletv? My firetv tv has been non stop playing junk ads / previews and slowing down my internet.

This is a good TV.
However, Panasonic is in a precarious position in relation to their TV business. They may exit it altogether (see below article), which is a shame because they just came back into the U.S. market in 2024 after first existing in 2016. I don't know what that means for warranty, software updates and support if they do exit the business again, but I just want to point out the potential risk.

The whole beauty of an OLED is the thinness of the screen when viewed from the side! This is THICK for an OLED Samsung really nailed it with their S95F OLED models.
If you're staring at your OLED from the side, you're doing it wrong.

When you install tvs for a living and set them up, this statement is absolutely not true. We have many problems setting up google tvs, from bricked updates etc, fire tvs take awhile to setup but not bad, but thats why you slap a apple tv on it. Never use a tvs OS and wear down the internals..
How the hell to do you "wear down the internals?" It's all electronics, which don't wear. I'm typing this on a 10-year-old laptop that is 100% factory even though it has a mechanical HD.

IMO, @$1499 this is a good deal! It's $200-$500 cheaper than a C5 on sale. Has all HDR formats including hdr 10+/DV, etc. It has a legit subwoofer output. May. It be as bright as a C5 but is basically a repackaged 77Z93A (not available in US) and uses a regular WOLED panel. It's supposed to have great upscaling and a very natural image without any edge enhancements and a decent game made. For me, it's the best all around Woled tv with the most options similar to a Sony Bravia 8 (regular) but less expensive. As for the fire tv, I highly recommend just using an Apple TV! And I believe there is a way to initially setup the tv without activating the fire OS.
