I'm still salty with Google for dropping the Nest Protect. They're famous for dropping hardware- makes me not want to invest in their ecosystem anymore.

I returned them to Costco and bought a different brand and have had no problems since.
The X-Sense combo detectors seem to have very good reviews, and a IMO a very cheap service to bypass the user and call emergency services ($50/year or $5/month) if desired. I went through the setup which was very thorough and I'm highly confident it'll just work. You can even customize how long the app/system waits for no user response before it calls emergency services down to 10 second intervals. There's a cheaper option that allows users to initiate the dispatch through the app as well. Neither is required for smart/app functionality, just if you want auto/quick emergency services dispatch and fee waivers for false dispatches.
The X-Sense detectors also claim a 3-5 year battery life with 1 CR123A lithium battery. This to me is insane compared to each Nest taking 6 AA lithium batteries that maybe lasted 2-3 years for me. I get that offloading the network connectivity is why the detectors last, but the setup and functionality of the base station and all detectors was flawless and I love this setup. Like Nest, they all alarm if there's a triggering event and each detector PLUS the base station can silence said event.
With a coupon code, I got 5 combo detectors and the base station for $149.60. Complete no brainer to switch for me and I'm excited to have done so.
BTW photoelectric is much better and ionizing.
Also also check the date of your alarms before replacing them. I've been able to get free replacements if they're within their 10 year period.
