How do you know if you have a neutral or not? My home is from the '50s
You'll need to pull off the cover plate of the switch, and see if you see some wires twisted together in the back. Most switches have a Load (or hot) wire coming in, and then another that goes live when the switch is engaged (or ON). Because it uses both of the live wires, the neutral wires from each strand will get twisted together in the back.

If there's an outlet nearby, you can run a neutral from it, but you'll want to know what you're doing, it's not just a diy project. (But not impossibly hard, either)

Most homes built before the 80s did not have a neutral wire run. If your home has been rewired anytime in the last 25yrs, they probably ran a neutral during that job.

Several years ago I was quoted nearly $500 for running a neutral to one room (LR) as someone else explained here (not something I wanted to attempt/risk) and well over 1k for a full house neutral run.

Since this isn't my forever home, I'm just finding cheaper alternatives as I go along.

Really for me, the Philips WiFi canister lights in the kitchen for less than $30 took care of the room I wanted to use voice/Alexa in the most (on/off, warm/cool/daylight and full dimming via commands, set-up in Wiz app).

And I'm completely happy with the Tapo Smart plug kit (w/remote switch useful to people not familiar with your voice setup) which uses the same app these switches use, and they're matter-certified.

What a great deal, unfortunately I don't have the neutral wire in this 70s home. But I'm here to say I bought the Tapo Smart Lamp Dimmer kit P135 (matter) last week for $20ish and I couldn't be happier with it. I just bought 2 more this morning. It comes with a remote switch. The Tapo app made setting up a bunch of customizations so easy. Control by Alexa works great. So if anyone else lacks a neutral wire but still wants great customization in a plug setting, I highly recommend any Tapo matter product and especially their app for setup.
How can you not have a neutral (white) wire? No ground maybe on a homes built in the 50s or older. Speaking for US here ...

So is there much of a difference between tapo and Kasa? I had the kasa ones on my wishlist, but this sale was quite a bit cheaper so I pulled the trigger. Am I gonna miss out on anything by not going with the kasa ones?

I've read the Kasa are more premium. They use two different apps as well.

Probably just the haul sale thread, there was a ton of good stuff. I got a single one of these for $5-6 after the %50 + %10.

They don't switch up and down, it's really just a clicky button in place of the switch. +- dimmers aren't as well defined as some other dimmer switches. The circle on the button lighting up when the lights are out is a neat feature. Setup was fast but I used the proprietary app. I think you might be able to connect these directly to google somehow with matter?
