Desktop Intel 13th & 14th gen models would draw more voltage than designed for and would melt. Laptops were unaffected outside of the i9 HX-series (a desktop chip cut down to fit in a laptop) chips; the i7/i5 HX & H-series chips don't boost high enough to suffer the same degradation issues as their desktop counterparts.

B&H has the LOQ 15 with i5 13450HX and an RTX 3050 (I know I know) for $550 shipped.

Looks like the processor is about 18% slower than this post's 13650HX.

If I don't care about gaming and just want a powerful but portable-ish workstation, is the processor worth $300 more?

I imagine that's going to depend on exactly what type of work you're doing on it.

Just be wary of the models prone to motherboard failures, do some research online

Also, it was never the 13700K / 14700K and below having the issues, it was the 13 and 14900 series with the biggest problems.
