This Sabrent USB C NVMe enclosure stands out as a sturdy, toolless aluminum case for turning spare NVMe drives into fast portable storage or a cloning drive. The Realtek RTL9210B controller, permanent thermal pad, and metal shell are praised for reliability and heat handling, and the enclosure works well with firmware updates and even off brand drives. It is also handy for swapping SSDs in and out. The main caveats are heat under heavy constant use, occasional disconnect or freeze issues on some setups, and speed limits on a 10 gigabit connection.

  • People cloning and shuttling NVMe drives, because it works reliably for drive copies and fast file transfers.

  • Laptop and desktop tinkerers swapping SSDs in and out, because the toolless clamshell makes drive changes quick and convenient.

  • Owners who want a sturdy 10Gbps enclosure for everyday storage, because it has held up through heavy daily use without failures.

  • Users repurposing spare NVMe drives for portable storage, because it has worked with off-brand drives and old drives from dead computers.

  • Linux boot drives that need rock-solid firmware stability, because older firmware can cause lockups, freezes, and random disconnects until updated.

  • People needing full NVMe speed for large transfers, because a 10Gbps connection can throttle faster drives hard.

  • Users running an enclosure continuously under heavy load, because it can heat up during constant use.

  • Router NAS setups that must wake drives reliably, because it can fail to wake from sleep and require a reconnect.

I think this is a great deal and a buy, but only if you don't care too much about speed; any nvme 3+ drive is going to be throttled to kingdom come on a 10gbps.

I have to shuttle massive amounts of data on my external nvmes so use USB4 enclosures and will upgrade to USB4 v2 / Thunderbolt 5 when my computers can handle it as that should max out the nvme 4.0 speeds which most of my drives run at.

You can also get nvme drives at 20gbps though those are a little harder to find for some reason.

But for most people where you're just storing data this is an exceptional deal.

The nice thing about this enclosure is that it has a permanent thermal pad. Most enclosures in this price range have peel-and-stick pads that can only be used once.

But RTL9210B is an upgraded version of the RTL9210, so RTL9210B is better and its not in this enclosure.
It's technically the RLT9210B chipset since I was able to flash the newest firmware without any issues from https://github.com/bensuperpc/rtl9210 or from https://www.station-drivers.com/i...ang,en-gb/

Yeah, the old design has been flawless. The Orico was finicky, but I flashed the firmware on both enclosures and they they have been fine since. The clam shell design is much more convenient.
Where's the firmware? One of mine is acting up and I want to try flashing it.
Thanks.

Bought one a week ago. It's surprisingly well made for the price point. I've mostly used it for cleaning up old SSDs (you know, to the extent that you can)

Then just last night I needed to copy a 7.5G iso to a flash drive and it was estimating 15 minutes till completion, then I remembered I had this guy laying around with a cheap Samsung SSD installed. I plugged it in and it copied the entire 7.5G in about 5 seconds.

The earlier post from DarnCrazy has the link to the station-drivers thread has the drivers I used. I had done this a while back and have not used the newest firmware yet.

I wonder why they changed the design. It does look sleeker but now it's not stackable
Probably to reduce heat. It adds some mass to where virtually all of the heat comes from. And this shape is probably intended to decentivize both stacking things on it and placing it "upside down" on a surface. And even if you do place it "upside down", it is still exposed to some airflow.

I'm assuming I need another enclosure for both NVMe and SATA m.2 drives?

this update failed for me, the cfg field is blank and remains blank even when i select the downloaded cfg files.

EDIT: got it to work by using the first firmware update of the final three that were listed.

Nice! I just realized I was still selecting the older firmware instead of the newest one. I just updated 4x of these Sabrent devices using the newest firmware 1.34.39

I own the NVME + SATA one and it works fantastically. Worth every penny IMO feels like a premium product.
