This Sabrent USB C NVMe enclosure stands out as a sturdy, toolless aluminum case for turning spare NVMe drives into fast portable storage or a cloning drive. The Realtek RTL9210B controller, permanent thermal pad, and metal shell are praised for reliability and heat handling, and the enclosure works well with firmware updates and even off brand drives. It is also handy for swapping SSDs in and out. The main caveats are heat under heavy constant use, occasional disconnect or freeze issues on some setups, and speed limits on a 10 gigabit connection.

Common Questions (5)

  • The Realtek RTL9210B firmware update has fixed random SSD disconnects, timeout issues, Linux USB link instability, and compatibility problems for several users. If the enclosure is freezing, locking up, or disconnecting, updating to firmware 1.34.39 is a practical first step.

  • It can heat up under heavy constant use, but the aluminum body and thermal pad help dissipate heat. Heat also depends on the SSD installed: some drives stay lukewarm during large writes, while others make the enclosure feel very hot.

  • Yes. It works for cloning drives and for quickly attaching an NVMe SSD to partition it or transfer files. Sabrent also provides a free Acronis True Image download for cloning.

  • It uses a Realtek RTL9210B controller. That chipset is commonly praised for compatibility, and the enclosure's firmware can be updated with Realtek RTL9210B firmware packages.

  • Yes, on a 10Gbps USB 3.2 Gen 2 connection NVMe drives are throttled well below their native speeds. It is best suited for storage and shuttling data, while USB4 or Thunderbolt enclosures are needed to get closer to full NVMe performance.

Can someone suggest a specific realtek chipset firmware to flash? There's a bunch, but everyone I try, when I'm booting my Linux Mint from the drive. I don't know why this happens, but it will randomly lock the nvme drive, I gotta manually restart.

Yeah, there is a newer firmware I linked earlier and I haven't had any timeout issues which is what one of the newer firmware fixed.

Firmware History
Version V1.34.39.032625:
Version V1.34.29.011325: Fixes an issue with random SSD disconnection
Version V1.33.44.011824: Improved Compatibility
Version V1.33.7.101923
Version V1.32.87.082923 addresses USB link instability seen in some SSD models when used in conjunction with Linux-based PCs, including the Solidigm P41 Plus. This update includes compatibility fixes in certain scenarios, including use with the Samsung 980 Pro
Bro, I luh u. Sick, just upgraded the firmware to 1.34.39. I'll test it in a bit, and chime back. Thank God I got off today, this was driving me nutz!!

Im curious i got me a legion PC last week and getting into Ai waifus for the first time filled my hd space up fast lol. Are external SSDs fast enough for COmfyUI? I think if i can get 4t more of ssd space i'd be set for a while. I sort of rather just do external though if it's not slowing it down too much. If i go internal im probalby going to go overpay and get a 4t ssd so i dont have to buy a new one fo ra while

I ran crystaldiskmark on this enclosure for you. The drive has enough to saturate these speeds by far. Here are my results, take them as you will. I'm not too familiar with ai workloads, but you should be fine theoretically:

I got one and it comes with a 2nd thermal pad. Printed on the pad it says "If your drive is single sided, add the additional tape here". But nowhere, manual or online, can I find out where I'm supposed to add the thermal tape to. To existing? To the back? I am using a single sided WD Black drive. This is so new there's no info. The Gen1 enclosure didn't come with the 2nd tape so no talk of it.

The pads are meant to physically interface between the NMVe drive and the metal cover to transmit heat between them. You don't want an air gap--air is an insulator, that's why we have double-paned windows.

Instead of adding two thin pads together (which might lead to trapped air bubbles), you can also get thicker pads. Here are some 1.5mm versions at Amazon, for example:
