I'm not sure if you're trolling but that's kind of the whole shtick. I thought s3 was excellent. Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey were both executive producers on it, and I think their hand shows. Mahershala Ali also put in work--he completely disappeared into Hayes, down to the old man mannerisms in the present day.
This Blu ray set is mainly valued for Season 1, which is repeatedly described as the standout and the reason to own the series. Season 3 also gets solid praise for strong performances from Mahershala Ali and Stephen Dorff, while Season 2 is often framed as a weaker, more uneven follow up with rushed writing and a very different feel. The set still has appeal for fans who want the full run, but the later seasons do not match the first season's level. A better fit if Season 1 is the main draw.
Fans who still want to watch Season 3, because it is described as legitimately good with strong performances even though it does not match Season 1.
Season 3 is repeatedly described as good, with standout performances from Mahershala Ali and Stephen Dorff. It is slower than Season 1 and not as highly regarded, but it is still considered a solid season and better than Season 2.
Season 1 is the standout and is widely treated as the best season, but Season 3 is also described as legitimately good and watchable. Season 2 is the weak point for many viewers, with complaints about rushed writing and a nonsensical plot.
Seasons 2 and 3 are described as feeling like completely different shows from Season 1. Season 2 leans into an overheated noir melodrama with the mystery taking a back seat, while Season 3 is slower but still praised for strong performances from Mahershala Ali and Stephen Dorff.
Season 2 is criticized for weak dialogue and a rushed, incoherent plot, but it does have strong atmosphere and Lera Lynn's songs. It can work better if you watch it for the vibes rather than the mystery.
Yea the writer fired the director of seasons 1 and directed season 2 himself. Not sure what happened in season 3 but it definitely wasn't the same guy as season 1.
Season 2 had multiple directors, none were directed by the writer, Nic Pizzolatto.
I always say, set aside expectations and watch season two for what it is: an overheated noir melodrama, all about characters, where the central mystery is almost irrelevant. Just go into it for vibes.
And hey, it could be worse - could be season 4.
It's as bad as season 4. Or worse. It's terrible. I couldnt watch it.
And people love to pile on, but season 3 ain't bad. It's no season 1 (almost no TV is), but its legitimately good.
^this.
Season 1 is almost untouchable. Extremely quotable, perfect casting for everyone from the leads to the side characters, with the only problem being it maybe took a couple episodes to really get going.
I know Season 3 never hits of the highs of Season 1, but it's still a good show with solid acting. Mahershala Ali and Stephen Dorff put in great performances. It's a little slower than the other seasons, but it's a great overall package.
Season 2 is nonsensical and poorly written, needing serious editing and more time in the writer's room. It was rushed out, and showed this badly. I was excited by the initial Lynchian vibes and dream sequences, but every time Vince Vaughn showed up with awful, fake sounding dialogue, or Taylor Kitsch's character got shoehorned into the plot, it ran the show off the rails. Colin Farrell and Rachel McAdams did their best to save it, but there wasn't a coherent plot to save.
Season 4... man, I was excited for this, but it really let me down with the ending. Jodie Foster was excellent, the setting was great, and the first few episodes were off to a good start, but it fell apart with the ending. I still think it's better than Season 2, but it was a disappointment overall.
If you put season 3 in front of a person who had never heard of the series and had no expectations, they'd rave about it. Season 1 got that novelty bump (and the accompanying cultural wave) in addition to being a very good season of television, so of course people are going to put it on a pedestal. But I think it's a disservice to trash season 3 and dissuade people new to the series from watching it.
Good to hear s3 is a least decent to good. Cancelled hbo before that. Considering this but interested at about $15-20 worth haha. A terrible s2 I never want to watch again isn't helping.
