This Carote set is aimed at easy everyday cooking, especially eggs, with a slick nonstick surface and simple cleanup. The pans are described as working well with a little oil or butter, and one similar Carote set has held up through daily use. The main concerns are durability and accuracy, since the coating has been reported to chip or flake within months, the handles can loosen, and the set may arrive as 9 pieces even though the listing shows 10. The PFOA free label also does not settle PFAS concerns, so it suits shoppers who are comfortable with that tradeoff.

Common Questions (5)

  • The set is described as very nonstick and easy to clean, and it can work well for daily egg cooking with a little oil or butter. For longer-term durability, some shoppers prefer stainless steel, carbon steel, or cast iron instead.

  • PFOA-free does not automatically mean PFAS-free. If avoiding fluorinated chemicals matters, look for cookware explicitly labeled PFAS-free or PTFE-free rather than relying on PFOA-free alone.

  • The listing can show 10 pieces, but the actual set appears to arrive as 9 pieces. The lids and pan protectors are counted among those pieces, and the 8-inch frying pan is reportedly not included.

  • The coating can chip or flake relatively easily, even with silicone utensils, and some report it lasting only about 3 months before wearing out. A different Carote set has also held up well to daily use, so longevity may vary by set and handling.

  • The stay-cool handles reportedly get loose after a couple of months of use. That makes handle durability a practical concern if you plan to use the set heavily.

Is there a specific brand or set that you would recommend? We don't need hexclad, but something that will last and be decent would be great...TIA
There are a lot of other sets that are completely PFAS-free including by this brand. In general, the ceramic coatings for nonstick should be PFAS-free but they could be using additives (other than PFOA) for the ceramic coating. I think Greenpan would be the best budget PFAS-free option and Caraway would be a higher end option for ceramic. I've had pretty good experience with Greenpan. As others mentioned, stainless steel, cast iron, carbon steel are other options but everyone is going to have a different opinion on those.

Not sure what your stainless steel pan is, but I can't fry an egg on stainless steel no matter how much butter and oil I use

This is a heat problem most of the time. You should wait another couple minutes.

Misleading photos on this slickdeal post show 10 pieces instead of 9 as stated in the description and the actual item. 8" Frying Pan is not included.

What's your take on T-Fal? That seems to be the set I see at Costco often that I've considered.

Interesting. I usually put the egg on when butter starts to brown and a drop of water causes popping. You think it needs to be hotter than that? That works great with the nonstick skillets.

You should look on YouTube for "fry egg on stainless steel," I can't see what's happening in your pan, but if you heat the pan properly then drop a bit of oil in the frypan you have made it nearly as nonstick as any nonstick pan.

I saw that most of their's are ceramic no-stick but the lack of saying not PFTE or PFAS is a little concerning. YOu would think they would advertise that if they were

It's made with a PTFE coating and is generally very similar to the name brand teflon. The claim is that PTFE is an inert PFAS compound as long as temperatures don't exceed 500 F or the coating isn't damaged. I just have nightmares thinking about how scratched to hell the Teflon pans were that my mom used growing up and now I can't fathom using a traditional non stick pan ever again lol.

Ceramic non-stick pans are generally PFAS-free and a safer alternative, while many pans marketed as "granite" actually use PTFE (Teflon) coatings that can contain PFAS, despite their name suggesting natural durability; always look for "PFAS-Free" or "PTFE-Free" labels for certainty, as "granite" refers to the look, not the material, and some ceramic pans might still have undisclosed chemicals.
Ceramic Cookware (PFAS-Free)
  • What it is: A mineral-based coating (silica from sand) on a metal base, offering a natural, slick surface.
  • PFAS Status: Most quality ceramic pans are genuinely free from PTFE, PFOA, and PFAS (the "forever chemicals").
  • Pros: Safer, easy to clean, good heat distribution, good for delicate foods.
  • Cons: Less durable, coating wears down faster than traditional pans, usually not dishwasher/metal utensil safe.
"Granite" Cookware (Often PFAS-Containing)
  • What it is: A marketing term for a metal pan (usually aluminum) with a non-stick coating that looks like granite.
  • PFAS Status: Often uses PTFE (Teflon) coatings, which can be made with PFAS, making them potentially risky if overheated.
  • Pros: Looks nice, can be sturdy.
  • Cons: "Granite" is misleading; performance is similar to standard Teflon pans; potential for chemical leaching.
How to Choose Wisely
  • Look for explicit labels: "PFAS-Free," "PTFE-Free," "PFOA-Free" (though all pans are PFOA-free now, so focus on the first two).
  • Ignore the "granite" name: It's cosmetic; check the actual coating type.
  • Consider pure ceramic or cast iron/carbon steel: For ultimate safety and longevity, uncoated options like seasoned cast iron or carbon steel are excellent, long-term choices, though they require more care.

PFAS are a large family of "forever chemicals," and PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene, known as Teflon brand name) is a specific type of PFAS used for non-stick coatings, while PFOS (Perfluorooctane Sulfonate) is another well-known, now largely phased-out, PFAS compound that was once used in their production. While PTFE is considered inert and stable in normal use, the manufacturing process and potential overheating or degradation of products containing these chemicals can release harmful PFAS into the environment, leading to health concerns like cancer and liver damage.

PFAS (Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances)
  • What it is: A vast group of thousands of man-made chemicals known for resisting water, grease, and heat.
  • Key Feature: The strong carbon-fluorine bond makes them extremely persistent, earning them the "forever chemicals" nickname.
  • Health Concerns: Accumulate in the body and environment, linked to liver damage, cancers, and immune issues.
PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene)
  • What it is: A specific, high-molecular-weight fluoropolymer within the PFAS family, chemically very stable.
  • Common Use: The non-stick coating on cookware (Teflon is a brand name).
  • Safety Nuance: Generally inert but can release toxic fumes if overheated (above 500°F/260°C) or scratched, potentially releasing other PFAS.
PFOA (Perfluorooctanoic Acid) & PFOS (Perfluorooctane Sulfonate)
  • What they are: Two notorious, smaller PFAS chemicals previously used in manufacturing PTFE and other products.
  • Status: PFOA was phased out of production in the U.S. by 2014, and PFOS is also largely restricted, but their legacy remains.
  • Relevance: Concerns about these led to the shift to PTFE-based coatings, but the coatings themselves still contain PFAS.
In Summary: Think of PFAS as the big family. PTFE (Teflon) is a member of that family, while PFOA and PFOS are older, problematic members that were used to make PTFE products but are now largely banned from that use.

The 5-Piece Carote PFOA-Free Non-Stick Induction Cookware, advertised with "nonstick granite material", is almost certain to contain PFAS, as its $30 price is far too low to be truly PFAS/PTFE-free.

Hot pan, cold oil.

Alternatively, carbon steel and cast iron are BIFL, wonderfully nonstick once properly seasoned, and induction compatible (literally anything a magnet sticks to is.)

Highly DO NOT recommend these. Only lasts for about 3 months and that's about it. Sure they will send you a replacement and a note to remove your bad review but I just don't like the flaking of the material after a while.
