I suspect those gift memberships don't have the same "must be a new member" restrictions but I'm not certain.
edit: took a photo of the sign in store today with terms:

I don't really have other options other than waiting until later this year? It seems they do the 18 mo in purpose because you can't just keep swapping between you and the wife and you would need to be without a membership for a few months
am I missing something? TIA
