The SN7100X is a fast 2TB Gen 4 NVMe drive that fits handhelds and laptops especially well, with strong sequential speeds, low power draw, and lower heat than many alternatives. It is described as an OEM style WD model that should handle gaming and general use smoothly, and its efficiency makes it a better match for confined devices. The main tradeoffs are that it is DRAM less, so sustained writes and endurance are not as strong as the SN850X, and PC gaming often does not need this much speed. Pricing also feels elevated, with some preferring to wait for a lower sale price.

  • The SN7100X can deliver efficient low power usage that suits handheld devices well.

  • The SN7100X is positioned as a WD OEM variant that still provides strong sequential performance for gaming and general use.

  • The SN7100X may run cooler than some budget NVMe designs, which can help thermals in portable systems.

  • The deal can be improved with a newsletter signup coupon that provides 10% off for new customers.

  • The SN7100X lacks DRAM, which can increase NAND wear and may reduce sustained performance.

  • The SN7100X can have looser sustained write and endurance ratings compared with the SN850X.

  • The SN7100X may throttle in confined performance-focused devices if SSD heat rises too much.

  • The SN7100X's 5500MB/s max read speed may cause PS5 compatibility issues if real-world speeds fall below the minimum requirement.

I definitely agree that it's not worth the extra price to buy an NVMe over SATA just for gaming, but I've seen most SATA drives priced pretty close to NVMe drives lately (sometimes more). In these instances, if you have the extra M.2 slots available, might as well spend just a bit more. I ran a 2TB SATA drive in my last PC with a Ryzen3700x and 3070. In my new build, which has a Gen4 NVMe, the difference in load times for most games was less than 2 seconds. Cyberpunk, for instance, took 7 seconds to load from main menu using the SATA. On the NVMe, it took 5 seconds. No other perceivable difference once loaded. The only time I noticed a difference was when transferring data back and forth which want get often. For every day use in the PC world, there's really nothing in Windows or current games that require (let alone utilize) the speed of an NVMe.
I think it's worth the small cost differential to buy NVMe instead of SATA, but for PC gaming, a Gen 3 NVMe will be really close to Gen 4 or Gen 5 NVMe for loading times.

There is no reason to buy SATA anymore for gaming. None.

4TB option for $252 from SanDisk with their 10% off for the first order is a great deal at this moment.

While I agree for the most part considering the current prices, there are still plenty of reasons to go SATA over NVMe. The best reason I can think would be for older builds, or Micro-ATX builds, that may only have a single M.2 slot with no room for expansion. In these instances, the NVMe would be used as the system drive and SATA drives could easily be used for secondary/game drives.

Another good reason would be if you find a SATA drive at a considerable discount or clearance somewhere. IF you luck out and find a SATA drive for less than half the current cost of the same capacity NVMe drive, I'd say go for it.

There are enough tests and benchmarks out there that show the speed of an NVMe is not utilized during in-game performance. I just upgraded to a new build (9800X3D w/ 5070ti), and the loading times on the installed NVMe are only 1-2 seconds faster than they were on the 2TB SATA that I had on my previous build (3700X w/ RTX3070). There is zero difference while in-game.

If I was getting this for a PC I would get one with DRAM and I always look for the highest endurance.

I got my SK Hynix P41 2TB about 6 weeks ago for $115. But that is the drive I would want.

I will also put it out their that THIS IS NOT THE TIME TO BUY... prices are INFLATED for no reason. This is not RAM... there is not AI driven storm of last generation's M.2's.

Really, I would wait 2 months and try again, or keep an eye out for when it goes below $165 (even though I paid $115). Same thing goes for RAM.

If you aren't going to be using it in a console where the lower heat of the 7100X will matter more, the 2TB SN850X is $135-$139 right now at Walmart (select stores only).

https://slickdeals.net/f/18870490

SN850X: ~7,300 MB/s read / ~6,300–6,600 MB/s write across capacities

SN7100X: ~7,250 MB/s read / ~6,900 MB/s write (1–2 TB models)

Choose SN850X if:
- You value DRAM cache and sustained performance under heavier loads.

- You want a proven high-end Gen4 drive with long track record.

-You're building a desktop gaming/creator rig.

Great all-around strong performer and longtime enthusiast favorite.

Choose SN7100X if:
- You want newer NAND and efficiency (battery-friendly in laptops portable consoles).

- You prefer lower heat and power draws.

- You're buying for gaming/system SSD where the tiny DRAM benefit isn't critical.

- You want slightly better write performance per dollar.

Best bang-for-your-buck modern Gen4 SSD.
Thanks got the last one at my store!

never gonna happen eh?

what are y'all doing with 2TB ssd
Gaming is the #1 thing, with many games reaching over 100GB... people with lots of data like storage. What do you do with a 240GB sata3 drive? EEK! Browse online? ok

There absolutely is massive AI-driven demand for NAND (as well as HDs). SSD prices are likely to shoot up just like RAM did. Things are likely to be much worse for both DRAM and NAND in 2 months.

How did I not know that WD bought SanDisk almost 10 years ago!!?!!
You may as well forget about it, WD recently spun them back off.

Pretty decent price for a 2TB drive with these specs. The SN7100X is basically WD's OEM/partner variant of their higher-end Gen4 lineup, so you're getting top-tier sequential numbers (7.2/6.9 GB/s) but with slightly looser sustained write and endurance ratings compared to the SN850X. Still plenty fast for gaming or general use.

They will do very fine in handhelds, anyway those handhelds max out at Gen4 anyway, and thermals on these WD OEM drives tend to be better than the Phison-based budget models. Just keep in mind that sequential speeds don't matter as much as random I/O for OS responsiveness, and WD's controller handles that pretty well.

I agree... NAND is shared with RAM... hence the crazy high price... but it goes well beyond just that. The world manufactures over produced in 2022 and 2023 so they actually cut their production... then the AI BOOM... and not we are ALL SCREWED.

But yah... I got like the very last deal around... that is how I feel. Firebat A5P (8745HS), 2tb SK Hynix P41 and 16GB x 2 ddr 5 5600. I paid $234 for the firebat (came with 16GB and 512GB) and $50 for the RAM on facebookmarketplace and $115 for my hard drive. AND I have not sold the original RAM as of yet... 8GB x 2 ddr5 5600 (figure I can get about $120)

OOS. Also it's a DRAM-Less model, so you get more wear on the NAND and potentially slower sustained speeds.
