This looks like a sweet deal. Too bad I'm too deep into the Nikon ecosystem.

I've been seeing a lot of people using Sonys lately. Are they better than Canon mirrorless?

If you didn't invest in any of these camera brands, then you can treat them as equal

Think of Sony as the Lexus of camera systems. Reliable and very nice, but not cheap (though not the most expensive either). There are other systems that do certain things better, but as a package, they are very tough to beat.

According to fine print, Star Money expires 30 days after issuance. Combined with Macy's normally inflated prices, that's some exceptionally bad value

I have the IV(4) and now 7RV.
I would not buy the 4 anywhere near this price. Maybe 1600-1800 for a USA/non-import.
For pics, go for any Sony with AI. For mostly video, 4 is still really good on Sony prime lenses. Undone and PotatoJet still use it for youtube vids.

Canon is a great camera system, but it's like Apple in the way they treat their closed ecosystem for their full-frame mirrorless cameras.

I've been with Canon for 25 years, and am stuck with their really expensive ecosystem (especially when it comes to higher quality lenses for their mirrorless full frame cameras, you can only use Canon lenses which are eye-wateringly expensive, like $1,500 or more expensive per lens). But, if I were starting out new today, I would go with the Lumix cameras. Like the Lumix S9 or the S52II or S5IIX. They're feature rich, and have an open lens ecosystem, which means you can find a lot of amazing quality, affordable lenses made by third-party manufacturers.

Not necessarily but it's also not about the body. The glass on the body plays a big role, I can get some stellar shots with a 2k lense on an R50, even an R100. The problem is that there really isn't many third party lense options with Canons RF/RF-D Mount... So you're kinda stuck with Canon lenses which are great, but big money.. I do think sigma or Tamron just released an RF mount lense in October. So maybe eventually we'll have more options

Sony, Canon, Nikon do the same thing. None of them are much ahead. (Canon pretty much caught up in sensor technology to Sony over the past five years.) Where Sony shines is the availability of a huge library of affordable and stellar third party lenses. Lenses Canon does NOT allow on their system. I could be years before Canon allows third party lenses if ever.

As noted above, the A7 V was just announced, and it's a quite significant upgrade.
