Community Reviews
Sony's a7 IV is framed as a strong full frame mirrorless body for video and a solid all around system, especially when paired with Sony's broad third party lens ecosystem. The camera itself is praised as reliable and capable, with the a7 IV still described as very good for video on Sony prime lenses. The main concern is value at this price, with several comments putting a fairer body price closer to $1,600 to $1,800. The Macy's Star Money promo also looks shaky, with reports of short expiration windows and third party seller orders not qualifying, making the bundle harder to justify.
Common Questions (4)
Sony has a much larger selection of affordable third-party lenses, which makes the system more flexible and often cheaper to build out. Canon RF/RF-D is more closed, so buyers can be stuck with expensive Canon lenses.
Macy's customer service confirmed the credit can be used to buy lenses. The offer is tied to the purchase, but orders fulfilled by third-party sellers may not qualify for the full Star Money amount.
The a7 IV is still a strong camera, especially for video on Sony prime lenses, but this price is considered high for the body and kit. A more reasonable target mentioned is about $1,600-$1,800 for a USA non-import.
Star Money expires 30 days after issuance. That makes it useful only if you can spend it quickly, especially since Macy's pricing is often inflated.

I would not buy the 4 anywhere near this price. Maybe 1600-1800 for a USA/non-import.
For pics, go for any Sony with AI. For mostly video, 4 is still really good on Sony prime lenses. Undone and PotatoJet still use it for youtube vids.
I've been with Canon for 25 years, and am stuck with their really expensive ecosystem (especially when it comes to higher quality lenses for their mirrorless full frame cameras, you can only use Canon lenses which are eye-wateringly expensive, like $1,500 or more expensive per lens). But, if I were starting out new today, I would go with the Lumix cameras. Like the Lumix S9 or the S52II or S5IIX. They're feature rich, and have an open lens ecosystem, which means you can find a lot of amazing quality, affordable lenses made by third-party manufacturers.

As noted above, the A7 V was just announced, and it's a quite significant upgrade.
