Community Reviews

Sony's a7 IV is framed as a strong full frame mirrorless body for video and a solid all around system, especially when paired with Sony's broad third party lens ecosystem. The camera itself is praised as reliable and capable, with the a7 IV still described as very good for video on Sony prime lenses. The main concern is value at this price, with several comments putting a fairer body price closer to $1,600 to $1,800. The Macy's Star Money promo also looks shaky, with reports of short expiration windows and third party seller orders not qualifying, making the bundle harder to justify.

Common Questions (4)

  • Sony has a much larger selection of affordable third-party lenses, which makes the system more flexible and often cheaper to build out. Canon RF/RF-D is more closed, so buyers can be stuck with expensive Canon lenses.

  • Macy's customer service confirmed the credit can be used to buy lenses. The offer is tied to the purchase, but orders fulfilled by third-party sellers may not qualify for the full Star Money amount.

  • The a7 IV is still a strong camera, especially for video on Sony prime lenses, but this price is considered high for the body and kit. A more reasonable target mentioned is about $1,600-$1,800 for a USA non-import.

  • Star Money expires 30 days after issuance. That makes it useful only if you can spend it quickly, especially since Macy's pricing is often inflated.

I've been seeing a lot of people using Sonys lately. Are they better than Canon mirrorless?
You can't go wrong with any. That is, if you think what your later version smartphone is inadequate for an objective reason.

The differences here, One has slightly faster AF. Another slightly better IQ due to a more advanced sensor for this day, and pioneering in the mirrorless world. And another, with many more accessories and cheaper glass, etc.

You missed adding Fujifilm mirrorless cameras into the list, Bigly!

All these differences are minimal for most users and indifferent at the end of the day.

Go for the best deal you see at buying time, for your budget.

According to fine print, Star Money expires 30 days after issuance. Combined with Macy's normally inflated prices, that's some exceptionally bad value
Can we use the star money for buying lens

So if I bought the sony 400-800 I'd get $620 in points which I could then put towards a tamron 28-75 G2 once the rewards hit. 2 Lenses for $3,370 before tax.

Anyone want to donate $3k to me? :-D

Seems like a decent deal if you can make use of the rewards. I have a a7iii so I'm skipping the a7IV and hopefully picking up the a7V late next year or early 2027.

*edit*
Also be mindful of the CB sites having a different rate (much lower) for marketplace sellers vs direct from Macy's

Surprised to see Macy's sells cameras! I'm glad it's actually sold by Adorama. I'd feel weird buying a camera from them

Did anyone actually receive their Star Money? I placed my order yesterday while the promotion was still active on the product pages. After my order was confirmed, I got an email saying I would only receive $20. I spoke with customer service this morning, and they told me that orders fulfilled by third-party sellers don't qualify. I even spoke with a manager for about 10 minutes, but they wouldn't make an exception.

So, on Macy's website this deal was showing active with timer until 12 AM pacific time but it ended at 12 AM Eastern Time . Their webpage was following Pacific time but the checkout page where all the calculations happen followed Eastern Time. I was placing order at 10:45 CST and it showed me correct star money points but by the time I check everything and place order the start money got reduced to $15 at 11:03 pm CST ? I Missed the deal 😓
