This Cudy AX3000 is a budget WiFi 6 router that stands out for easy setup, OpenWrt support, and solid range in some homes. It has worked well with mesh extenders and can cover brick and basement layouts, while the stock firmware makes WireGuard VPN and VPN exceptions simple to manage. The main limits are the 2.5GbE WAN only, no 2.5GbE LAN or USB 3.0, and reports of a device limit around 32 clients on stock firmware. It looks like a practical low cost pick if you do not need heavy multi gigabit LAN use.

  • The router supports OpenWrt flashing, which can enable more advanced networking options beyond stock firmware.

  • The router can deliver strong Wi‑Fi reception across a two-story brick home when paired with an AX3000 extender.

  • The stock firmware provides a simple WireGuard VPN interface with straightforward VPN exception handling.

  • The router can be easy to configure and may improve range compared with an older ASUS AC68U.

  • Only the WAN port is 2.5GbE, so reaching that bandwidth requires a fast wireless client near the router.

  • The router can hit a device limit around the low 30s, which may cause slow or flaky behavior.

  • The router lacks 2.5GbE LAN and USB 3.0, which can limit high-speed LAN expansion and USB performance.

  • Wi‑Fi range cannot be reliably estimated without testing because building materials and shielding vary widely.

Could I use this with Xfinity gateway and eero 3 pack mesh devices? House is old and signal is shoddy on first floor even with eero's.
If you're having Wi-Fi issues with four access points (Xfinity gateway and 3 Eero's), I'd recommend doing a Wi-Fi analysis. Your house might be using a building material that insulates Wi-Fi well (steel studs, concrete, etc.).

Personally, I run Ethernet cables to all my access points to overcome this. I have three access points in a 1,600 sq.ft ranch and I have full coverage throughout my home (basement too).

Frustrating it doesn't have 2.5 Gbps LAN and USB 3.0. Especially as Cudy now has USB WAN working in their base firmware.
It's a $50 router...

so this should work well for a two story house? router is in the laundry room
I got this along with the AX3000 extender, and I am having great reception throughout my two-story (+basement) brick house. I put OpenWRT on both of them, and followed some guides for getting fast transition set up and optimized. I have the main router in the basement, and the extender ran through a wall up to the top floor.

Our community has rated this post as helpful. If you agree, why not thank

FYI, I got the non-2.5Gb version of this router a few months ago through Amazon Vine- it's not exactly the same but looking at the specs I think the only difference are the 2.5Gb ports.

I was using it as the frontline router/firewall, not for the mesh.
( I have a separate deco mesh behind the front router/firewall handling that part)

Pros
Easy setup.
Decent UI.
OpenWRT under the hood, flashable to stock OpenWRT
Fairly fast

Cons
Just a warning- I had to discontinue using this router because I hit a device limit. I think it was around 32? One day everything just started acting slow/flaky and I debugged it to this limitation and had to revert back to my trusty WRT32X.

For 59 bucks I don't think you can go wrong, but just be aware of this limitation.

Which firmware (stock or openwrt) were you running when you hit the limit?

Stock. The UI for wireguard VPN ( I use Nord) and VPN exceptions is REALLY simple on the stock firmware. I haven't updated stock OpenWRT in a while, but from what I remember those two things are kind of a PITA.

I think it only has 256mb of RAM so that's why it hit the limit. 🤷 ♂️

Still bet you could have eeked out more connections and less ram usage w/ OpenWRT.

Thinking about getting this but I'm already pulling 400Mbps with my Wifi 5 router.

I don't know, is the laundry room in the Attic or down in the second level basement? Or maybe out in the laundry suite... Err I mean mother in law suite?
It's on the second floor, diagonal from the living room downstairs where the tv is
