The Sonos just seems to have more clarity and a 'cleaner' tone. And the bass output and accuracy is unreal on the Sonos.
That said, I still prefer the Q990D simply because of the price tag with EDU/EPP discount. The Sonos is better, but not enough to justify 2-3x the cost, unless you're really into movies. At that point though, I would probably put the effort into a proper AVR setup.
Costco pricing:- Sonos Arc Ultra $879.99- Eras 100 pair $319.99- Gen 3 sub $549.99Total = $1,749.97 + $140 gift cards = $1,609.97
And bonus for Executive Members getting 2% back = $35

This Sonos bundle centers on the Arc Ultra, Sub 4, and two Era 100s, and the strongest draw is its clean, wireless home theater setup with standout clarity for movies, music, and dialogue. The Sub 4 adds powerful, accurate bass, and the system is easy to set up in the Sonos app with HDMI eARC and room tuning. The main tradeoffs are price and value versus Samsung, Bose, or a wired receiver setup, plus the Era 100 rears are not Atmos speakers. Coupon and pricing glitches also showed up for some carts.
The Arc Ultra bundle can deliver clearer dialogue and center-channel presence than Samsung 990D setups.
The Arc Ultra system can connect through HDMI eARC while keeping movies and TV playback free of latency.
The Sonos app setup can run an automated test and sound adjustment for easier commissioning.
The Sonos ecosystem can support multi-room playback and network-based operation with minimal wiring.
The advertised bundle price may not apply to all shoppers because some orders show a much higher total.
A coupon code may fail to apply because the order can be rejected as not qualifying for the promotion.
The Era rear speakers may not integrate well as surround channels for movie surround performance in some rooms.
The Arc Ultra sound can sound poor in vaulted or echoey rooms because up-firing speakers are sensitive to environment.

The soundbar is not the basis of the system in this Sonos setup. All speakers can be used individually. Sonos would likely work with you to get a replacement if the soundbar went out, but if not you could replace it with any other Sonos soundbar (any model). Each speaker is it's own "receiver" in effect. You link them together in the app or you can separate them and use them in pairs/individually/etc.

Could you replace the main bar with something new? Sure. But you're still out $1649...
And you're still paying more for a path with no upgrades.
"Wireless" rears are cool, but still have to be powered. So, they aren't wireless.
I'm not intentionally trashing Sonos here. I just think on a deal website, you can come up with more value elsewhere. If you have to have Sonos, this is a solid deal.
But from a SlickDeal standpoint, two high quality mains, eventually a high quality center speaker... That's the way. Swap out the receiver as tech trends come and go. But, keep the core. Don't build around two wireless Bluetooth speakers.
Following the testing, I very quickly contacted Samsung for an RMA. Why? The main difference for me was dialogue. With the 990D, every voice sounded to me like it's coming through one of those all-in-one microphone speaker setups that people use on the sidewalk to tell you what religion you need to convert to. Even higher pitched women's voices sounded boomy and bassy. I was spoiled by my last HT soundbar system which had remarkable center channel capabilities that made it sound like everyone speaking was right in your living room, not talking to you through a microphone from the sidewalk or at a wedding. The Sonos is far far better in that respect. Now the Sonos has its shortcomings, and even with the discounts it was still far more than double the cost of the 990D, but it's the only system I can really find that deploys easily and can fake like it's a discrete system in many respects even though it's not nearly as capable. I never tested the Era 100's but for rears I don't doubt that they're good enough for most. Good luck to those taking the plunge!

In simple terms, the Arc Ultra soundbar connects via HDMI ARC or eARC to your TV. The other Sonos components connect wirelessly through your wifi network. Once everything is configured in the Sonos App, each of your TV devices (inputs) will automatically play through the Sonos system. There are no wires to connect other than AC power for each Sonos component and a single HDMI cable from the Arc soundbar to your TV.
Before purchasing I'd recommend reviewing various online articles and/or videos that explain how to setup a Sonos home theater system. This brief video gives a decent overview. Hope it helps.
