Well, screw Nintendo and their double dipping by shorting us on storage and then allowing game publishers to sell us game-key cards that take up storage space forcing us to buy this overpriced media.
Express is the new standard and is expensive in comparison to the older SD cards. Most people buying these for Switch 2, which can't use the older cards.
Community Reviews
This 256GB Samsung P9 Express microSD card stands out as a relatively cheap way to add Switch 2 storage, especially for a name brand Micro SD Express card. The comments frame it as the same speed and specs as the Mario packaging deal, just cheaper, and note that Express cards are still pricey compared with older SD cards. It also looks well suited to Switch 2 and other compatible devices, with enough room for a few large games. The main concern is capacity, since modern titles can eat through 256GB quickly, making 512GB more appealing for heavier libraries. A practical pick if you want to double storage without paying for the larger size.
Switch 2 owners who want to expand storage because they only have about 72GB free at setup and a 256GB Express card should cover their needs, since commenters said $33 felt like an easy buy versus higher prices.
Switch 2 owners buying MicroSD Express specifically to take advantage of the newer format, because commenters noted Express is the new standard and Switch 2 can't use older cards.
People using a MicroSD Express-compatible device (not just a standard microSD slot), because commenters said you only get the speed benefits if the device supports MicroSD Express; otherwise it falls back to standard UHS-I behavior.
Mini5 Pro Drone owners looking for a fast microSD Express card, because one commenter said it looks like a good fit for that drone.
Gamers who want a single larger card instead of multiple smaller ones, because one commenter argued it isn't worth buying two 256GB cards and pointed to large game sizes (like FFVII Remake being ~100GB) as the reason to go bigger.
People planning to use a UHS-I-only adapter/reader, because commenters said hardware described as ideal for UHS-1 likely won't take advantage of an Express card and you'd need compatible Express hardware.
Anyone who assumes an SD Express reader will work with this microSD Express card, because commenters clarified that the linked reader was for CFexpress (CompactFlash) and is incompatible with SD/microSD Express.
Switch 2 owners who expect to install lots of 60GB+ games, because commenters said 256GB can run out quickly once multiple large titles are installed.
Switch 2 owners who already see their 256GB card space shrink to only ~32GB after use, because one commenter reported that outcome and said they'll move to 512GB next time as game sizes keep growing.

FFVII Remake will be 100GB so you're better off keeping one big one.

Other publishers have as well.
Like on the Xbox and Sony systems that have a disc and still need a large download the key cards are a compromise. At lleast you can resell them and loan them out, unlike a pure digital game.
Nintendo doesn't mandate any publisher use one or the other, so I'm unsure how offering a key card is a play on nostalgia and a money grab by them.
But all of this is an easy find upon research.
Sure, you can still resell and loan them out, but that doesn't change the core issue. Tiny on-board storage, mostly third-party games are GKC's, and additional storage is outrageously priced.
And sure, Nintendo doesn't mandate it, but by making it an option while also charging the publishers more to use their cartridge, they are making it plainly obvious which format to use.
I used to be like you, glazing the game key cards as being acceptable. Then I saw the light when I put the whole picture together.

For 55 it was tough for me to buy it but $33 is a good price for this.
missed out on the GS one due to not being a pro member, glad to see these are going on sale.
I know plenty of folks will be wanting a larger one, but seems like a solid deal nonetheless if you want to double your Switch 2's memory.
