This 256GB Samsung P9 Express microSD card stands out as a relatively cheap way to add Switch 2 storage, especially for a name brand Micro SD Express card. The comments frame it as the same speed and specs as the Mario packaging deal, just cheaper, and note that Express cards are still pricey compared with older SD cards. It also looks well suited to Switch 2 and other compatible devices, with enough room for a few large games. The main concern is capacity, since modern titles can eat through 256GB quickly, making 512GB more appealing for heavier libraries. A practical pick if you want to double storage without paying for the larger size.

Common Questions (4)

  • 256GB can cover a few large games, but modern titles can be 60GB+ and FFVII Remake is cited at about 100GB. Several comments note that a 256GB card is enough for doubling Switch 2 memory or for a setup with around 72GB free, but it can fill quickly if you install multiple AAA games.

  • $32.99 is described as the cheapest name-brand 256GB MicroSD Express price seen and cheaper than a prior $55 price point. It is also viewed as about $7 less than a similar Mario-branded front-page deal, making it a strong value for Express storage.

  • It works at Express speeds only in devices that support MicroSD Express, such as Switch 2. In older microSD-only devices it falls back to standard UHS-I behavior, so compatibility matters if you want the faster transfer rates.

  • It can be a good fit for devices that support MicroSD Express, including a Mini 5 Pro drone mention. If the device only supports standard microSD, it will still work as a UHS-I card, but you will not get Express speeds.

Double check me, but this appears to be the same speed, and essentially the same thing as the front page deal with Mario on the packaging, but $7 cheaper

I'm sure Nintendo gets a cut of the sales from that one.

Well, screw Nintendo and their double dipping by shorting us on storage and then allowing game publishers to sell us game-key cards that take up storage space forcing us to buy this overpriced media.

Yeah, I just found out about the game-key cards. These are essentially just dummy cartridges that allow you to download the game? And, I heard that Metroid 4 is one of the rare games stored on the cartridge, but the cartridge games load slower. I didn't research before buying the system for my daughter, but it is a downer, how greedy and evil companies prey on nostalgia.

Back to this express card: I bought it and am returning the Mario branded one.

It's not "rare", nintendo themselves will always use a cart for their titles.

Other publishers have as well.

Like on the Xbox and Sony systems that have a disc and still need a large download the key cards are a compromise. At lleast you can resell them and loan them out, unlike a pure digital game.

Nintendo doesn't mandate any publisher use one or the other, so I'm unsure how offering a key card is a play on nostalgia and a money grab by them.

But all of this is an easy find upon research.

While they don't mandate it, they also no longer offer the cheaper game cards with less storage. This incentivizes the developer to use the key cards instead of paying more money for a game card with a greater amount of storage they don't need.

Why are there so few 'true' Switch 2 physical releases? [nintendolife.com]

Switch 2 Cartridge games are slower than downloads – Tests confirm [overclock3d.net]

Now cite something that makes what you say make sense, since "all of this is an easy find upon research."

Of course other game manufacturers use cartridges. That has nothing to do with what I was saying. Cartridges are the 3rd slowest way to load games on the switch 2, behind the storage that is built into the console, and then the sd express card. I think you're dismissive and lack comprehension skills. Share something that's actual helpful. Just because other companies may do the same thing doesn't mean it's good Nintendo does it too.

I got the 512GB of this for $75 from the last deal, but might return and get this instead - better price per GB.

Not a great price
This is a great price for Micro SD Express.

Express is the new standard and is expensive in comparison to the older SD cards. Most people buying these for Switch 2, which can't use the older cards.
