I've 100%'d this game as an old fan of the series. As far as a sandbox game goes it's fine to drive around and cause general chaos, but there's nothing that makes it really stand out within the genre. The scenery is good but overall the sandbox feels very generic. The combat, story and mission structure however is not good at all.
This a far cry from Saints Row 2/3. The intended gritty reboot wound up more a cringey rehash.
It's honestly not that bad. It's a pretty good open world game. I just think that they got crazier and crazier with every game, and had nowhere to go, so now that this game is slightly more grounded in reality, people think that it sucks, or that it is woke. Well, the series has been "woke" from day one. You could play your main character as a black man, or a Latino man, or an Asian man. And, in the sequel, you could have your male character fully transition into a woman if you wanted. The start of the second game has you getting into an accident where you have to totally reconstruct how your character looks. Then, the fourth game makes your character canonically pansexual, as you can have sex with every single member on your crew, including a robot on your spaceship. You don't even have to make your main character a black woman in this game, you can customize her to be a white male if you want.
It's sad what they did to this series. Saints Row The Third was amazing
My personal favorite has always been two, especially with the level of clothing and car customization. But, three was also good, and is on deeply discounted sale on both Xbox and PlayStation digitally right now.

I agree with you.
The real kicker in all of this is that "woke" is just some BS politically expedient talking point for people seeking the spotlight or public positions of power to get their constituents all riled up and angsty.
Media, movies, games, have always had elements of diversity and aren't necessarily bad or good because of it.
Media can be bad when we're force-fed plotlines or tropes, and not solely because there is an emphasis on a multicultural cast.
I'm so exhausted from these garbage talking points that are purposefully aimed to sew division and get into people's heads.
So the consensus I'm getting here is that Saints Row 2,3 are good and that I should pass on the others. Is this correct?
Also, I see that there is an older Saints Row (XBox era) and a 2022 version. Is the 2022 version a remake/remaster of the original, or an entirely new game altogether?
Asking these questions because the digital version of Saints Row: The Third Remastered" is just $4.50 on playstation.com, so it's peaking my interest. I'm also looking at Far Cry 4 since its just $4.

No, all of the Saints Row games are good. But, the consensus is that the best ones are two and three. Nobody said to skip anything. It's actually a continuing story from game to game, like the Yakuza games. The 2022 version is a remake, but not really, as it takes place in a completely different place, with completely different people. So, it's more of a soft reboot of the franchise. Just buy all of the games if you can get them cheaply. Xbox is the only console that has all of the games. As the very first game was an Xbox exclusive. The first one has aged pretty poorly, but it is the most "GTA" like of them all, before they went in their own direction. It also had the main characters using cell phones as a menu system before GTA did that.

Thanks for the info. Much appreciated. Will get PlayStation version for 2 and 3 (and maybe 1) the next time I catch a great sale.
