Flame retardant material used to clean grates does not seem great to me for eating. Natural materials is a safer option.
Once the grill is hot, you can use pieces of wet paper towel to clean the metal grating...a much safer option and any and all residue will burn off next time you light the grill. Use tongs to handle the paper towel of course!
