For most users, however—especially those who rely on ISP-provided routers—I would still recommend using DAS. Treat it simply as an external enclosure for your laptop or phone, rather than relying on a NAS that is bottlenecked by poor network performance.

My experiences with Terramaster would make me positively inclined toward their units. I have a Terramaster D8 hybrid (very similar to this unit but with 4 nvme slots as well), and it is well built with decent cooling. The lack of RAID is disappointing, but there are software options. I myself use Stablebit Drivepool with my DAS since I use Windows 11 (for specific reasons), and it is not the same as RAID but it suits my needs.
