If you are doing wireless backhaul tri-band is nice but not necessarily required. It will reduce your speed by having to use the same wifi to talk to both the devices and the upstream router but if your WiFi is often capable of much higher theoretical speeds than people's internet. Even if it is limiting speeds 500 mbs is still plenty useful in most cases even if you have 1gb fiber. Even 50 or 100mbs is plenty for most things. Yeah big game or other downloads will take longer but stuff will still work. Tri-band with two 5ghz connections is nice for wired backhaul and can help improve performance but certainly isn't required.
Community Reviews
This is a Wi Fi 6 mesh kit best suited for extending coverage across a house, especially when wired backhaul is available. ASUS AiMesh compatibility lets mixed ASUS routers work together, and wired setups are described as stable with strong coverage. Wireless backhaul can still perform well, with tri band systems delivering much better range and faster remote room speeds than dual band setups. Caveats include reports of weak signal, daily crashes, and stock firmware problems, plus it is less compelling if you already have wiring or need seamless compatibility with TP Link gear.
Common Questions (5)
It works best with wired backhaul, and wired backhaul makes tri-band less important. Without wires, tri-band can help wireless backhaul performance, but the system can still be usable for many homes even if speeds drop from theoretical maximums.
Some users report weak signal, daily crashes or reboots, and poor stock firmware behavior. The model also hasn't had a BIOS revision since 2024-10-21, which raises support concerns.
For wireless backhaul, tri-band systems are preferred because the extra band reduces contention between client traffic and node-to-node traffic. In one real-world setup, a triband Wi‑Fi 6 mesh raised a back bedroom from about 15 Mbps to about 100 Mbps at the same node locations.
Yes. ASUS AiMesh routers can work together across mixed models, so you can add these nodes to an existing ASUS mesh setup. Wired backhaul has been reported to give strong whole-home coverage in mixed-router setups.
At $79 for a 2-pack with free shipping, it is far below the cited alternatives of $149 at Micro Center for a 2-pack and $199 at Best Buy for a 3-pack. That makes it a strong price if you specifically need mesh Wi‑Fi 6 hardware.

Most of these consumers that buy into mesh systems probably using them as wireless. If you have the capability of hardwiring, you're likely smart enough to just utilize ubiquiti aps
