This is a Wi Fi 6 mesh kit best suited for extending coverage across a house, especially when wired backhaul is available. ASUS AiMesh compatibility lets mixed ASUS routers work together, and wired setups are described as stable with strong coverage. Wireless backhaul can still perform well, with tri band systems delivering much better range and faster remote room speeds than dual band setups. Caveats include reports of weak signal, daily crashes, and stock firmware problems, plus it is less compelling if you already have wiring or need seamless compatibility with TP Link gear.

Common Questions (5)

  • It works best with wired backhaul, and wired backhaul makes tri-band less important. Without wires, tri-band can help wireless backhaul performance, but the system can still be usable for many homes even if speeds drop from theoretical maximums.

  • Some users report weak signal, daily crashes or reboots, and poor stock firmware behavior. The model also hasn't had a BIOS revision since 2024-10-21, which raises support concerns.

  • For wireless backhaul, tri-band systems are preferred because the extra band reduces contention between client traffic and node-to-node traffic. In one real-world setup, a triband Wi‑Fi 6 mesh raised a back bedroom from about 15 Mbps to about 100 Mbps at the same node locations.

  • Yes. ASUS AiMesh routers can work together across mixed models, so you can add these nodes to an existing ASUS mesh setup. Wired backhaul has been reported to give strong whole-home coverage in mixed-router setups.

  • At $79 for a 2-pack with free shipping, it is far below the cited alternatives of $149 at Micro Center for a 2-pack and $199 at Best Buy for a 3-pack. That makes it a strong price if you specifically need mesh Wi‑Fi 6 hardware.

If i have tp link deco in my house, can i add these as extension?
The fast answer is no, but the correct answer is that you can set them up as an extension access point with a major caveat being they will not be mesh compatible with the tplink. If you were to name the wifi SSid's and passwords all to match, you would have significant wifi drops.

If you are doing wireless backhaul tri-band is nice but not necessarily required. It will reduce your speed by having to use the same wifi to talk to both the devices and the upstream router but if your WiFi is often capable of much higher theoretical speeds than people's internet. Even if it is limiting speeds 500 mbs is still plenty useful in most cases even if you have 1gb fiber. Even 50 or 100mbs is plenty for most things.
My parents have 1gbps Google Fiber, and Google installed Nest Wifi Pro devices (dual band) that got about 15 Mbps to the back bedroom. I was planning to install a wire, but my route wasn't going to go well, I didn't have the right color wire, and I didn't have much time. So I bought a triband (2 5 GHz bands) Wifi 6 mesh, and now the back bedroom gets 100 Mbps with nodes installed in the exact same places. Granted, a fair bit of this improvement is just getting rid of Google Wifi's horrible antenna quality.

Having the third band doubles performance and reduces crosstalk so extreme range scenarios are definitely a place to have a dedicated backhaul band.

Funny thing about mesh networks. Some devices will grab onto the worst node and not let go. I used to have some Amcrest security cameras they would do this, coupled with randomized Mac addresses, low and behold the cameras worked like crap. Never bothered with mesh again.

Some Mesh systems allow to "fix" clients to specific nodes. Random MACs obviously make things more difficult, but usually they do not change until restart

This sucks. Signal not strong. It crashed at least once a day and rebooted itself (checked the logs). Returned it and got 2 RT-AX86U and setup as master and satellite using AiMesh. Never looked back.

As someone with very little understanding of wifi systems - I have xfinity at home, and my kids always complain that their games are laggy, and their zoom calls drop a lot. Will this fix that, and work with the white box from comcast?
The first most important thing to understand is the actual problem. There's (free apps or tools on your phone) to determine two things.

1. Speed: what total download speed are you getting. If it's 50-100mbs shared over a distance by some Internet hungry devices and phones your starting speed might be low. This will not help just.

Strength: lots of free ways to determine the dbm or strength of your existing router in different rooms. If it's good in some areas and not others this can dramatically help with that.

Just don't want you to buy it and it doesn't solve the underlying problem.

I don't know if Asus is supporting this model anymore.

I have a separate model Asus Zenwifi XT6600 and the router has been going down more frequently, and have been having issues with just ethernet connection. Asus Zenwifi is great, but does still experience the typical mesh issues.

Clearly you are a very sophisticated and rich person if you've experienced the luxury that is triband WiFi. Perhaps next you will tell us about your fancy meal at the Olive Garden where you didn't think twice about the meatball add-on for your never-ending pasta bowl or the way your deep pockets enable you drink Starbucks every day like a movie star. Please, tell us more about your lifestyle of the rich and famous where you can buy things out of the reach of the poor Slickdealers who must choose between triband WiFi and shoes for our children.

Totally fine if you have a wired backhaul...
