This Mac mini M4 deal stands out as a strong value for a compact macOS desktop, especially for everyday work, media, coding, and light creative use. The 16GB of memory and 256GB SSD are enough for many setups, and external Thunderbolt storage or an SSD upgrade can stretch it further. It also pairs well with existing monitors and peripherals, making it appealing for a DIY desktop setup. The main caveat is the small internal storage, which can feel tight for video work or large libraries, so it fits best when you are comfortable adding external storage.

Common Questions (5)

  • Yes, storage can be expanded externally very easily with Thunderbolt 4/USB4 SSDs, and several users report internal SSD replacement is possible on the 2024 Mac mini with a proprietary module. For most people, external storage is the simpler path; internal replacement may require another Mac and a restore process.

  • Yes. The common workflow is to buy at Best Buy first, then use chat or order support with a Micro Center link and a store ZIP code showing stock. Best Buy then issues a refund or credit for the difference, often within minutes to a few hours, though some cases take longer.

  • Usually yes, but the exact requirement is inconsistent. Some matches were approved using a Micro Center store in another state or far away, while other attempts were denied when the linked store was out of stock or the rep enforced a local-stock rule.

  • It is enough for light use, but many consider it tight for media, photo libraries, or pro video work. Several comments recommend pairing the base model with an external SSD or choosing the 512GB model if you need more local space.

  • Yes for general desktop use, browsing, iMessage/FaceTime integration, Plex/Immich/Docker, and even some audio or emulator workloads. One caveat is that music-production users mentioned Bluetooth latency/channel issues, and storage is the main limitation for heavier workflows.

editing ProRes 4444 XQ, which have a datarate of 4Gbps.
That tiny 256GB SSD, AFTER the system and common apps, and system caches, you got about 150GB left.
On top of that, you are supposed to leave at least 10% empty on any storage device, so that cuts it down to 124GB of actual usable space.
Assuming you have ZERO files other than the single video file, you can store about 3 min of ProRes video clip, and leave some room for the compressed export.
People still like to tout how M4 is so great at video editing blah blah. The chip is maybe capable, but you can't utilize it.
Don't tell me it can do web browsing. of course it can, so can my dual core CPU from 20 yrs ago, or a $20 netbook, or $10 phone.
people who REALLY edit...don't use the internal drive....

Also... I dare him to try using his dual core CPU from 20 years ago or $20 netbook to handle a few chrome tabs in 2025 LOL

Let's be fair though, he's probably not video editing for work --- probably for some youtube videos, instagram reels, or tiktok which many people do!

What do people use these for? And with 256gb, I am always regretting not going higher when I bought my M1 MBP in 2021.

Got a price match from Best Buy despite giving them my home zip code that doesn't have a microcenter within a thousand miles

So worth a shot if you aren't near MC

You can, it's not soldered but it's using a proprietary slot.https://slimq.life/products/2tb-d...ac-mini-m4https://www.amazon.com/SSD-2TB-Dr...B0F6SLGNDY
Thanks for the tip! Didn't know that replacing the SSD was possible. It's a moderate difficulty rating though- not a problem for me. https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/How+...24)/180199

The Mac Mini M4, M4 Pro, and Mac Studio all have upgradable SSD. I upgraded my M4 Mac Mini to a 2TB SSD for around $260. It isn't difficult but does require another Mac with Thunderbolt connection as you will need to download and install the new OS onto the Mini with the new SSD.At this price point you're saving over $700 compared to Apple for a 2TB Mac Mini M4.

Was there a specific script or pattern you followed for this? I'm seeing denial after denial for "it's not listed in stock on the site," despite them seeing a link listing it in stock.

Was there a specific script you followed? I haven't had any success with price match chats, with everyone saying they see it as out of stock even if I provide a valid store-linked listing with in-stock and a corresponding zipcode
