The $500 offer showed for me with a package of U200, 6MB internet and unlimited phone service.
In the end I ordered on the phone because my order couldn't be processed. When I called they saw the "ExtraGift" code and it was applicable. They also offered me 10$/month for 6 months off of the u200 package, my first month of HD free, and an additional $40 Visa card for the 6MB internet package.
On a side note, the reason they couldn't process my order was because I was considered "High Risk" when they did a credit check. I am certain I am not and AT&T could not tell me why that was the case. I called equifax and got a copy of my credit report. The report shows no negative information at all, and an excellent payment history. I just purchased a home, which actually hasn't shown up on the credit report yet, and was approved for the loan in December. I had a credit score done at that time and it was above 700. Anyone have any ideas? I can't process the order while considered "High Risk" unless I pay a non refundable $450 fee! I keep getting the jerk around from Equifax and AT&T. I am going to do a conference call today and see if that helps. Maybe when the mortgage shows up that will help too. Pretty annoying though, no cable or internet at home till then.
Pros
1) The TV service is phenomenal
2) The price on the phone service is good, no difference in quality
3) Pricing is always competitive *AND* they seem to 'shop the competition' -- you won't usually have to threaten them with cancellation to get a match (cable in my area will make you go through with a disconnect before they decide they want you enough to lower service)
Cons
1) The phone is not a hard line - power-out=no phone; this only matters to a few people at this point
2) Whereas almost everyone is always friendly and helpful, the sheer size of AT&T and the way it is organized makes it difficult for someone in customer service to get to you locally
3) Installation . . .see below.
----------------
Installation
You are "green lighted" by street, not by house. This means that if you get a certain number of houses (I don't know if it's one house or a percentage) that is "within range", then the database (both what you can online and customer service & sales can see) will say you have the ability to get the service.
Installation time is usually estimated at 2hrs per service (6hr installation for all 3).
I tried to have internet-only installed a year and a half ago. They were over-booked for install, and I basically waited for 8 hours for the guy to show up. After 5 hours (Saturday) all of the customer service phone numbers were closed for the weekend and I basically was going nuts. One rep had gotten my phone number to the end-tech, who DID call, and ultimately got there at 8pm.
The poor guy was exhausted . . . being the nice guy I am, I asked him to still do the install
The only problem that I see with this is that if their internal system was better, they could have known that already. Phone companies have VERY detailed maps of all of the wiring in their territory, both on paper, and on computer that they know how far you are out. This apparently was never integrated into the system before U-Verse was rolled out.
---------------------
The bottom line is the price and service is good, but setup can potentially be a hassle. When my dish contract is up in August, I'm going to give them another shot to install; hopefully they've put a repeater in since then.
Just FYI, if you go back and read other UVerse threads, you will hear about people who had no trouble getting the rebate and others who did have trouble. I did have trouble (got $200 in Visa cards instead of promised $425), but a few calls to Customer Service took care of it. It helped tremendously that, during my original order, I asked them to specifically document the rebate amount in the notes.
Cons
1) The phone is not a hard line - power-out=no phone; this only matters to a few people at this point.
When I had my U-verse installed in January, they included a pretty robust looking
Uninterruptable Power Supply connected to the router. I believe it supplies power
for 4 hours.

three major credit reporting agencies to place a "fraud alert" on your credit report?
Or, if you didn't specifically request a fraud alert, have you recently disputed an entry
as "not belonging" to you? (because I believe in such cases, Experien and others will
place a 1-month "fraud alert" on your records to prevent Identity Theft.)
I'd make a quick call and double-check that it isn't a fraud alert preventing AT&T from
retrieving your credit information.

how often that works, particularly when they risk losing a customer...
