I have one of these. When my PC goes to sleep, the drives shut off properly, but the enclosure fan keeps running without stopping the entire time.

A couple reviews complaining that this DAS won't stay active and there's a power timeout that can't be disabled and which requires a hard reset to bring the drives back online. That's insane.

Liking that built in power supply, but only 5gbps for 4 drives?

Is the fan easily replaceable?

Hard on mine maybe easier on this one? I have the 9948C3 which has no external screws. Per Amazon Rufus, "For fan replacement: Unfortunately, customers report there's no straightforward way to access the internal electronics without potentially damaging the unit's sealed construction. One reviewer specifically noted: "I wanted to upgrade the fan, but it seems there's no easy way to get into the internal electronics. Modders beware.""

In theory, you can pry off the faceplate (if held by clips, if adhesive you're out of luck) and access screws which let you remove the entire assembly from the aluminum unibody, but it's basically not intended for access.

While this one features external screws, I'm not confident they're used to keep the frame to the unibody (they might be used just to mount components) as a lot of manufactures of these unibody aluminum cases use adhesive to mount the frames to the unibody (see Beelink [youtube.com]).

5 Gbps is going to be a limitation if you have four magnetic drives all set up in a RAID 0 and screaming at maximum sequential transfer rates. But I suspect a lot of people aren't doing that, and instead are running redundant setups and doing more random IO, so 5 is fine for that considering the price point. If you need more, you probably know that are planning appropriately to run 10/20/40 Gbps setups.

So very few reviews. I've been using mediasonic drive bays, but looking at this because the price is a lot cheaper.

since it's evidently not good for plex due it's turning off, what is a good plex use das option alternative? also, is there a suggested good, better, best hard drives for this and options where to buy?

Ideally you are going to want enterprise or NAS grade CMR hard drives running at 5,400 RPM for longevity, warranty, and lower temperatures.

Recommending a particular brand is difficult as every brand has its armies of loyal supporters and its hordes of detractors.

Assuming the photos are to be trusted, it looks quite easy, as the screws are holding in the back panel and the fan is right behind it.

I really don't understand where they're getting the "230MBps" from... that's even slower than practical speeds on SATA II, and certainly slower than the speeds you're expecting to see just from USB3 bottlenecks. Perhaps it's just managing expectations of people putting crappy drives in it? Otherwise I have to assume it's a really terrible raid card...
