The Mini 3 with DJI RC stands out as a compact 4K drone with strong camera quality and long flight time, especially with the extended battery pushing it past 50 minutes. The controller and flight setup are a big part of the appeal, and the drone is described as a pretty great first drone. The main drawbacks are the lack of obstacle avoidance and growing uncertainty around DJI availability, warranty coverage, repairs, and future software support in the U.S. A solid pick if those tradeoffs fit your needs.

  • First-time drone pilots who want easy aerial practice, because the Mini 3 is described as a pretty great starter drone with great camera quality.

  • Pilots who want long practice sessions, because the extended battery can push flight time past 50 minutes.

  • Drone owners who use Litchi Pilot for waypoint flying, because it can work on this model when the regular Litchi app does not.

  • Buyers who need guaranteed long-term support, because warranties, DJI Care, updates, and repair options may be limited.

  • Pilots who need obstacle avoidance for crash-prone flying, because this model has no obstacle-avoidance cameras and can be broken repeatedly.

  • Drone owners expecting the included controller to work with newer models, because the controller is not compatible with newer drones.

Why are all of these lately being sold only by 3rd party sellers
Amazon stopped selling DJI drones late last year. Once they were all gone, the contract was not renewed since DJI decided not to ship *anything* to the US so both Amazon and Best Buy cancelled the DJI drone program. You can bet that one day when DJI decides they are ready to come back, it won't be easy. there might be a drone or two of old stock laying around but Amazon and Best Buy have probably long since returned the bulk of all their unsold inventory to DJI.

What's the best drone for beginner ease of use not requiring a mobile device, but decent features?

It's not a ban on current drones, it's a statement that the U.S. isn't going to approve any new drone models going forward. You can still buy a Mini 5 Pro or Air 3S and it will work fine. You just won't be able to buy the eventual Mini 6 Pro. The lack of availability has been ongoing since spring and is mostly due to DJI abandoning the U.S. market.
If the ban actually holds, you can bet DJI will eventually stop pushing updates, patches and/or long-term support.

Thanks to the ban, there now isn't one in the USA. It's back to build-your-own. There are no consumer-focused drone manufacturers in the US.

It's not up to DJI to decide whether they ship anything to the US or not.

The idea for the ban was to eliminate consumer drones in the US going forward. They want high dollar corporate and government eyes in the sky.

Glad you agree with me. Both Amazon and Best Buy turned off the DJI spigot long ago so DJI doesn't get to decide whether they ship drones to Amazon or Best Buy.

When a US resident goes to dji.com and places an order, DJI will take their money and ship the products. After it is dispatched from China, US customs decides whether to let the shipment enter the country or not. DJI decides whether to ship or not and the US government decides whether to allow it to be delivered inside the country. The US government started seizing shipments so DJI changed their mind and decided they no longer want to ship product to the US only to have it seized and now DJI had to deal with an angry customer.

Whenever DJI changes their mind and decide to ship again to the US, they'll likely discover that US customs hasn't changed their ways and after a few more "issues" once against DJI will problem go back to their original decision which is no further shipments from our China factory to US addresses that go thru US customs.

Ok, I get it: it is stupid to buy any DJI drones from now on.

So what should us 1st-time droners buy then?

I want to have a drone to help my neighborhood fight porch pirates, so it needs to do rounds at certain times. Also I want one that can be modified to accommodate an Arduino mini and a speaker.

Sounds here like this deal is still the best option. It doesn't sound like anybody is going to take their place and the market will be nil.

Don't forget that you're buying an expensive item with potentially no warranty and limited repair options.

Amazon sold/shipped at least two different DJI drone models within the past few months. Even now some SKUs are available sold by Amazon.

Not sure what is the objective of pushing this narrative.

DJI is still repairing existing drones in the US. Thankfully, for now.
