Some say it's easier to play with a thinner pick so they start with them. However many later on move to a thicker pick for tone and more control as well as speed. I recommend to anyone who is learning if their goal is a few chords and to be able to strum a few chords to sing with. Fine use a thinner to medium pick to start. However if your goal is to one day play lead guitar, IMO it's easier to start with a medium to heavy (leaning on the heavier side) as it it's easier to start new than changing over later. Least that's the experience witnessed over 50yrs if playing. Sure picks are a personal thing and some great lead players use thin picks , there's always exceptions.

I'd recommend grabbing a Dunlop variety pack. That way you can try a bunch out instead of getting stuck with 12 that you may not like.

These Fender celluloid picks are best understood as heavy, dotted 351s with extra grip, aimed at players who want more control and a warmer feel. The grip dots and natural shape get praise, and the heavy thickness is described as useful for lead work, bass, or players who prefer a firmer pick. Medium thickness is still the safer all around choice for most strumming, while thin picks remain the easier starting point for beginners. The price also draws skepticism for only 12 picks, especially versus larger variety packs or similar alternatives. A niche pick set that fits a specific feel.

Common Questions (4)

  • Heavy picks are better suited to lead-style playing, bass, or heavy metal, while thin or medium picks are usually preferred for strumming. For most players, medium is the safer all-around choice, and heavy picks can feel too stiff for general rhythm work.

  • Thin picks are commonly recommended for new players learning to strum, while medium picks are a common next step and heavy picks are often easier to start with if the goal is lead guitar. If the goal is just chords and singing, thin-to-medium is the easier starting point.

  • These are priced higher because the 351 celluloid picks have tiny dotted grip texture added for extra hold. Similar Fender-style celluloid picks from D'Addario or Planet Waves may be cheaper if you want the same basic material without this specific grip feature.

  • Yes, they can be used as pry tools for opening electronic devices like phones and laptops. Their thin pick shape makes them useful for separating clips or seams without being a guitar-only accessory.

I know nothing about guitar picks. Are these good for some one just starting to learn to play an electric guitar?

I would be some. I am not interested in lead guitar in and of itself. I compose write music as well as record and perform, I focus on rhythm for my playing due to this, but I still prefer thin even when picking. Its really just preference. People play guitar "wrong" all the time and it's awesome when good tunes come out anyway.

Sweet, this will give me a half dozen to lose in the couch cushion, three to drop in the sound hole, and three to actually use.
