Some say it's easier to play with a thinner pick so they start with them. However many later on move to a thicker pick for tone and more control as well as speed. I recommend to anyone who is learning if their goal is a few chords and to be able to strum a few chords to sing with. Fine use a thinner to medium pick to start. However if your goal is to one day play lead guitar, IMO it's easier to start with a medium to heavy (leaning on the heavier side) as it it's easier to start new than changing over later. Least that's the experience witnessed over 50yrs if playing. Sure picks are a personal thing and some great lead players use thin picks , there's always exceptions.

I'd recommend grabbing a Dunlop variety pack. That way you can try a bunch out instead of getting stuck with 12 that you may not like.

These Fender celluloid picks are best understood as heavy, dotted 351s with extra grip, aimed at players who want more control and a warmer feel. The grip dots and natural shape get praise, and the heavy thickness is described as useful for lead work, bass, or players who prefer a firmer pick. Medium thickness is still the safer all around choice for most strumming, while thin picks remain the easier starting point for beginners. The price also draws skepticism for only 12 picks, especially versus larger variety packs or similar alternatives. A niche pick set that fits a specific feel.

  • Medium thickness can suit many players who want strumming control without committing to lead-guitar feel.

  • Tiny dotted grip can add extra hold compared with regular Fender celluloid picks.

  • These picks can work for rhythm-focused playing, composing, recording, and performing.

  • The natural shape and comfort of Fender extra heavy picks can make this style worth trying first.

    ElGato01

  • Heavy picks can feel like a poor choice for some players and may be avoided.

  • Thin picks may be fine for learning strumming but they can underperform for individual picking or soloing.

    Cagny

  • A 12-pack can feel extremely high priced for the number of picks included.

    Cedric Greene

  • Some players may prefer trying a variety pack instead of being stuck with 12 picks they do not like.

Most guitar players would not like these. If you want a thick pick, you're probably playing lead and want a smaller and sharper pick like a Jazz III. If you want a larger pick for strumming, you want a thin or medium pick. Maybe bass players like these, but I'd never use them.

I know nothing about guitar picks. Are these good for some one just starting to learn to play an electric guitar?
No. Thin picks are recommended for new players.

Fender extra heavy has been my favorite pick for many many years. And I've tried quite a few. Sadly they are not part of the deal. For anyone who has never tried these I would hold back the comments and give them a try first. The most comfortable and natural shaped pick I've found so far.

I recommend the Hetfields White Fang picks. I've been through a bunch of different kinds playing for the last 5 months learning guitar and these are a winner

What are the thin for?
Thin is for learning how to strum but they're not great for individual picking or soloing.

When you're learning to play, you'll want a thin pick. When you start to get good, you'll want a medium pick. When you start to get REALLY good, you'll want a heavy pick.

FYI These are more expensive than regular Fender celluloid picks because they have extra grip with these tiny dots added to them. Heavy picks are usually good for heavy metal playing styles or bass. But I prefer the Fender medium picks for everything including bass.
If you want more grip and a warmer tone, try Dunop Nylon picks.
Also, D'Addario and Planet Waves celluloid picks are virtually identical to Fender celluloid picks, in case you find a better deal on those.
D'Addario also has a nice gift pack bundle that includes a good black Nylon strap, one regular full set of electric guitar strings 10s (10-46 gauge), and 10 celluloid picks for $16 on Amazon, or less on sale.
