The ZenBook 14 stands out as a thin OLED touchscreen laptop with strong everyday performance from the Ultra 7 255H, and the open box price around $535 to $650 makes it look attractive for the hardware. The 14 inch display, 16GB memory, and 512GB SSD fit a portable productivity setup, and the chip is framed as better for brute force work than AI focused Lunar Lake parts. The main drawbacks are soldered RAM, a low 13 TOPS NPU rating, and reports of loud fan behavior. Screen clarity and speakers also drew criticism, making it a solid compact option if those tradeoffs are acceptable.
Common Questions (5)
The Ultra 7 255H configuration is listed at 13 TOPS, which is low compared with newer AI-focused chips. That means it is less geared toward heavy on-device AI features than Lunar Lake parts like the 256V/258V.
At $650, it is considered decent but not standout against alternatives like the HP OmniBook X Flip 14 or Samsung Book 5 Pro. The main tradeoffs are 16GB/512GB storage, the 255H chip, and a weaker AI/NPU spec versus some competing OLED models with more RAM or storage.
The 258V is better for TOPS and AI use, while the 255H is better on paper for brute-force processing but draws more power. The 255H is also described as having a lower iGPU and less AI focus than the Lunar Lake 256V/258V chips.
The fan can run constantly and be loud even under light use, and the OLED screen has been described as oddly blurry, possibly because of the digitizer layer. The speakers have also been described as very poor.
The 16GB RAM is soldered, so it is not user-upgradeable. That makes the configuration fixed at purchase, which matters if you want more memory later.

Became kind of an emergency to buy new laptop after my Dell xps 15 unfortunately purchased for over 2k just over 3 years ago (so outside credit card warranty extension) suddenly stopped charging or turning on so presumably shot motherboard. For this reason don't care much about large disk space for data except to have ample for software installations, while all personal data stored on cloud onedrive!

If you see reviews for desktop motherboards and how each motherboard has a different propensity for accepting high RAM clocks, thats part of the improved signal path to the memory slots that allows it.
So actual numbers, lpddr5x runs at ~0.5w, zenbooks usually run 7467MTs, but lpddr5x can go above 8000.
Your regular SODIMM ddr5 is going to be 1.1v at a max 5600MTs, which manufacturers usually install slower RAM.
When you are a manufacturer competing against other ultraportables, choosing LPDDR5X means you are more competitive on performance per watt, and overall battery life.
So soldered memory is objectively not lame. Its pretty cool. Just has its tradeoffs.
Your only real option will be the framework laptop.
