It can give you more room for mouse movement, especially if you want to lower sensitivity for competitive games.
Its also more comfortable, can help with anchoring your keyboard/gaming keypad, looks nicer, etc.
Note I have this version and when i received it i was suppressed it had stitched edges but was happy it did
