  • About Duolingo:
    • Lessons focus on a real-life goal — for instance, ordering at a restaurant. Learners develop the vocabulary and grammar needed to achieve that goal through lots of varied practice in reading, writing, listening, and speaking.
    • Duolingo allows learners to discover patterns on their own without needing to focus on language rules — the same way you learned your first language as a child. This approach, called "implicit learning," is ideal for developing a strong foundational knowledge of a language and its rules.
    • At Duolingo, we're committed to improvement. Test questions are embedded throughout our courses to measure how learners are progressing — and to show where Duolingo can improve.

  • About this deal:
    • This offer matches last year's frontpage deal which garnered over 60 thumbs up.
    • Please see the original post for additional details & give the wiki and additional forum comments a read for helpful discussion.

Super Duolingo is framed as a useful language practice tool for building vocabulary, daily habit, and basic conversation support, especially when paired with real world speaking, videos, or other study methods. It can help with pronunciation, reading, and keeping skills fresh, and some courses like Spanish seem stronger than less common languages. The main limits are thin or repetitive content in smaller languages, weak grammar explanation, and a ceiling well short of fluency. The deal itself is also clouded by pricing and eligibility quirks, including the 60 percent off math, trial restrictions, and a family plan at $120.

  • Duolingo can reinforce vocabulary and help learners understand phrases and pronunciation through daily practice.

  • Duolingo can support basic, day-to-day communication when paired with real-world interactions and other learning tools.

  • Duolingo can help keep language skills fresh enough for travel and being understood in real situations.

  • The deal can be easier to access after changing the password on the web when the offer does not appear in-app.

  • Duolingo's "60% off" framing can be misleading because commenters report Duolingo raises prices around discounts and the math may not add up.

  • Duolingo may repeat the same material after running out of content, which can reduce variety for some languages.

  • Duolingo may not explain sentence structure well, which can limit progress toward more intellectual conversation.

  • Duolingo's customer support can be unhelpful, and deeper explanations may require upgrading to Duolingo Max.

If it's normally $95.99, the offer is for 60% off, and they are offering it for $60... someone's math isn't mathing.
60% off is compared to paying monthly for 1yr

This is ridiculous, they offered a 7 day free trial 2 days ago, and if you took that like I did, now you are ineligible for the offer until your trial expires, which is sounds like it will in 3 days or so.

I didn't find Duolingo useful for learning Mandarin (simplified) compared to SuperChinese, HelloChinese, ChineseSkill, Yoyo Chinese.

I used Duolingo for several years but finally threw in the towel when many of the helpful learning tools were eliminated. The biggest being the discussion link within the lesson you were on which took you to the online forum where the context of the translation was discussed. This site used to be community run, not any more, only about $$$ now.

As a person with a 2753 day stream. Avoid this app. When I needed support. I got a %100 AI response (email said it was) that didn't help me. The App icon changes to gross icon images. The name of the app even changes moving the location in your apps. It teaches you sentences but not now to have an actual conversation. The real help to learn is behind a paywall to Duolino Max that actually explains why you got something wrong.

I actually met someone recently who used the app + a combination of youtube videos to become fully fluent in English.

She was born and raised in China and I couldn't even tell she had an accent at all.

So it can work if you are dedicated and are willing to suppliment it I guess.

No one can become fluent without immersing themselves into the culture and being around people who speak it everyday. These learning tools are only for the basics. It teaches you how to communicate as a tourist in the country.
